John David Booty early in round 4 would be fine by me.

If Booty is a projected 4th-rounder, doesn't that mean Angelo will take him in the first or second round?

Report on Brennan from the Senior Bowl:

Sliders
Colt Brennan/QB/Hawaii: Brennan's inadequate arm strength is obvious to all in attendance. His passes lack any velocity which gives the defensive backs extra time to break up his throws, something that's been a common occurrence.

and another one mentioned in the thread....

Andre Woodson/QB/Kentucky: Woodson has been all over the place with his throws and has shown poor accuracy. His receivers are consistently slowing up in routes, reaching back or leaving their feet in order to try and catch the ball

and another....

John David Booty, QB, USC: Booty has not distinguished himself at the Senior Bowl. His arm strength and timing have come into question as his outs lack zip and arrive late.

Interesting Hawkeye Vince.

Sounds like a lot of QB's stock will drop. There are no franchise QB's out there but there are some with decent potential.

Sounds like Colt Brennan isn't one of those players.

He's officially off my big board.

Chad Henne is lighting up practices though.
Chad Henne, QB, Michigan: The former Wolverine has looked solid the past two days. He throws the nicest deep pass of any quarterback in attendance and has connected on several throws of 40-plus yards.

The Bears are showing a lot of interest in the QB from Delaware, Joe Flacca. I have only seen him play once, in the championship game versus Appalachian State. He looked good but ASU's D was nothing great. He has prototypical size at 6-6 235. I assume he has a strong arm, although that may not be correct. He seemed to have good pocket presence but was not a runner. I believe he was originally at a Division 1 school but transferred. They are talking about his stock maybe getting him into the second round.

I still think this is a draft where you should not reach for a qb. If someone does not fall to you, the position can be avoided this year.

I think he was originally recruited by Pitt, but I could be wrong about that.

Joe Flacco

Strengths:
Has excellent size and a big frame...Has an outstanding arm and can make all the throws...Quick delivery...Pretty accurate...Nice touch and timing...Throws a terrific deep ball...Really smart and a hard worker....Tough and durable...Had a fantastic senior campaign...Solid leadership ability...Very productive...Still has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Is not very mobile...Will have some throws sail on him...He needs to clean up and refine his mechanics and footwork...Instincts in the pocket are questionable...Too confident in his arm and will force things...Does not have a lot of experience...Will have to adjust to a pro style offense..Hasn't played much against top competition.

Notes:
Name is pronounced "“flack-oh”"...Father Stephen played football and baseball at the University of Pennsylvania....Began his college career at Pittsburgh where he redshirted and then served as Tyler Palko's backup...He transferred down a level in search of more playing time in 2005...Worked predominantly out of the shotgun with the Blue Hens...Not a finished product but an intriguing developmental signal caller with all the physical tools you look for...Has starting potential down the line.

I saw Flacco in a couple playoff games as well. I told the guy I was watching with, "Why don't the Bears ever find somebody like this?"

He has good size and a strong arm. I thought he was a guy you might be able to sneak in the 4th or 5th round but now it seems his stock is rising and I don't know if I'd blow a 2nd rounder on the guy. They've got other needs for picks that high.

He didn't look too mobile in the games that I saw either. I think if you can get him in Rounds 4+ it may be worth it though.

I am expecting the Bears to sign Travelle Wharton as a FA so my desire for a OT might be satisfied before the draft. If they could somehow land Wharton, Turner AND Walker before the draft this could be a new high powered offense next year.

If something like that happened then I would love to have the WR from Oklahoma.

Wharton is a guy I have talked about as well. He would be the top LT on the market, and isn't considered to be an upper level tackle, but he gets the job done, and would allow the Bears to move John Tait back to RT so both bookends would upgrade over what we saw last season.

I'd still like to add another guard in free agency, but if we add Wharton, we can probably eliminate any upper tier free agent (Faneca) from being brought in. I wouldn't be opposed to spending a 2nd round pick on a guard as well.

I'd still draft an O lineman in the first two rounds, even if you picked up Wharton.

I agree. They should draft at least 2 (of course not in the first 2 rounds).

And let them fester like Josh Beekman this year when he should have been playing? They might as well pick up free agents.

Can it be taken as a coincidence that the four teams in this league that had their teams in the Conference Championship games were either #1 overall picks, traded for #1 overall picks in the same draft, or arguably the best QB's of all time? Do we have that kind of QB on our roster right now? I think the answer is no.

I don't really think you can take a common theme from any of the QB play. Peyton Manning was highly regarded, but some people thought Ryan Leaf would be better. I think it's safe to say that Peyton was the most "can't miss" of all the qb's.

Tom Brady is one of those once in a decade QB's that exceeds expectations far beyond the draft scouting report(Favre was the last one before him).

Eli Manning has not met his potential yet from when he was drafted. He's shown signs in the playoffs, but the argument on Eli Manning is not over. He didn't even have an all pro year this year. Eli could have a Rex Grossman like fall from grace next year.

Philip Rivers regressed this year and has played good enough to get to the Patriots. I think Rivers will end up being very good but he's also not an all pro qb.

So if that's what we need to win a Super Bowl and that guy isn't available in free agency, and we're probably ultimately going to have to find that guy in the draft, and we have a top half of the 1st round pick, why wouldn't we take another shot? Without a game changing QB, which seem to have to be homegrown, we won't be in the Super Bowl anytime soon.

What's the common theme? Eli Manning has been already labeled as a bust by many, is averaging under 200 yards a game in the playoffs, and may end up losing his job next year just like Rex Grossman did.

Tom Brady was a 6th round pick that wasn't that good in college that became the best QB in NFL history(possibly).

Peyton Manning was considered a sure thing coming out of college and has lived up to the hype. Ryan Leaf was also considered a sure thing and some said he would be better than Manning.

Philip Rivers regressed this year or at worst didn't improve. He wasn't even the one to lead them on the game winning drive against Indianapolis.

There is no common theme here. Add in the fact that Chad Henne has as good of a chance of success in the NFL as Brian Brohm or Matt Ryan or Andre Woodson(see Tom Brady and everyone drafted before him).

Here are the Super Bowl winning QB's of recent time.
Peyton Manning-A sure fire NFL star coming out of college who lived up to the hype. #1 pick
Ben Roethlisburger-A good QB from a MAC school who was the third QB taken. #11 pick
Tom Brady-Most would have predicted he would be in the league for 3 years max. Craig Krenzel was more highly regarded coming out of college. Barely kept his spot as starting QB at Michigan. 6th round pick
Brad Johnson- Journeyman QB that managed games.
Trent Dilfer- Definition of game manager
Kurt Warner- Ex-arena league QB. Not even a journeyman. Lucky he ever made it to the NFL.
John Elway-Hall of fame QB. #1 pick
Brett Favre-Similar to Brady. Highly exceeded expectations. 33rd pick
Troy Aikman-Hall of Fame QB. #1 pick
Steve Young-Hall of Fame QB. Started in USFL. #1 pick in supplemental draft.

The only real constant I see there is that you draft a QB #1 and he meets potential.

This is a deep QB draft but there are no stars. Drafting the third best QB in the draft at 14 is a reach. Maybe if all of them are available and you get your main guy then it's worth it.

Pick a lineman. Reach for a WR in a deep WR draft. Fix your other offensive issues.

We can bring in a young QB. That's probably a good idea but there are other needs we can fill at 14 that are more sure fire than any QB out there.

There are sketchy rumors circulating that the Cowboys may be negotiating with their ex-head coach's current staff in Miami to deal for the #1 overall pick in the draft. The Cowboys are said to covet Darren McFadden as a centerpiece of a 1-2 punch on offense with Tony Romo for the next 7-10 years in the Troy Aikman/Emmitt Smith look. The Cowboys are said to be hinting at offering both of their 1st round picks (#22 and #28) and RB Marion Barber. In order to make this trade happen, the Dolphins would have to agree to a long term deal with Barber and it is likely some additional compensation would be required, likely to include at least a mid-round pick 3rd-5th.

That being said, if this proves to be true, if the Dolphins select Glenn Dorsey or Chris Long anyway, expect the Cowboys to lessen the deal a bit and offer a similar package to the Rams at #2, and the Falcons at #3. The Falcons are the team drafting him in my current projection, barring a trade up to #1. But what you should take from this is that the Cowboys are likely trying to make a move.

With a team like Miami and all the issues they have, this would be a tough deal to pass up. You get a number 1 back in Barber and potentially two more starters right away for basically Dorsey (who is going to be a very good DT - I think he'll be a Tommie Harris or better caliber). If I'm the Dolphins, I probably look to either shore up one more position out of Dallas with some depth somewhere else.

One thing that makes the deal curious is the rehab of Ronnie Brown. Will he be 100% by the time next season starts.

The dolphins should jump at this. I wouldn't be suprised if they could move Barber for an additional #1.

What an awful, awful move for the Cowboys! Was the running game really the problem in Dallas this year?

It may not have been, but everyone has seen what happened in Minnesota. Darren McFadden has the potential to make as big of an impact as Adrian Peterson(the good one).

I don't think that will happen, but it is certainly attempting to make a splash.

The problem with taking a QB is that it's very hard to predict which QBs will be successful. Only 1 rookie QB from the last two years have seems to be a sure fire franchise QB (Young).

Another problem is that JA/Smith's philosophy is to run 1st pass 2nd. So while it's possible to get to the SB w/ a great RB and average QB its much more difficult, only been done 2 times in the last 10 years. Thus showing it's easier to get to the SB with a great QB and average RB.

Another thing to consider the top 8 QBs made the playoffs this year.

This is why I'm high on Derek Anderson. It's much less riskier to trade for a proven player, even if it's been 1 year, then a rookie. Too bad we didn't get Drew Brees when he was available. He was coming off a serious injury so he was a risk at the time also.

With our "running of the bus" mentality it will be harder for us to get back to the SB but not impossible.

I'd argue that you can go back as far as the 2005 draft and the only one who has shown the ability to be a franchise QB is Derek anderson. I think Young will eventually have to get better throwing the ball or he's the next mike Vick (talented, but never reaching that ability)

Ronnie Brown had a knee injury in week 7 and missed the rest of the season. Yes, he was having a good year, but there is no idea of how well he will be after he comes back.
