I don't remember the pre Ditka years all that well. There are some ambiguous images in my mind of Neil Armstrong and Bob Thomas making a field goal to get them into the playoffs. However, I didn't exist in the sixties and wasn't paying attention in the 70s.

I believe this year will be the low point.

I think it will be for most. The Cutler fatigue has set in on everyone. A fresh start will be good.

It was two years ago.

Since then, the franchise has just been lying to themselves thinking they actually had a pro team on the field. At least now they have seemed to embrace that they suck.

The Bob Thomas game was a Jack Pardee joint. Then they got throttled by Dorsett and Newhouse.

Neill with 2 Ls made the playoffs also but also got taken down by Jaworski and the exceptionally tall Harold Carmichael.

But, even those years you could enjoy a Neill Armstrong show with the table-top telestrator and Jeannie Morris shooting evil eyes at Johnny.

I started following football around 1970 or so. I was around for the end of the Jim Dooley regime and the start of the Abe Gibron regime. There is no way I can include the Fox era amongst those two.....not yet!

Also,I'm still pissed by the 1979 playoff loss to the Eagles that included a phantom fumble by Payton.

Yes, because of my Cutler loathing and disgust at Ryan/Fox combination, when the hire of a GM in his mid 30s seemed destined for failure. He isn't a Wunderkind like Theo, as is obvious now.

Even Trestman was not the low for me. Previous low was 1999-2000 with the John Shoop offense of never throwing down-field and of course, the stellar QB play of Cade McNown. The Bears managed just three wins that season. Pure football hell that was.

I got there the last Trestman season. I haven't recovered yet. Between the Bears and ND this year, football is on hospice in my sports world right now.

I would say the most devastated I've been was every time Mike Brown got hurt. That always crushed me because they were so good with him.

I'm not trying to take credit for being the first to say this, but I really do think the NFL has peaked. Quality of play has been trickling off the last few seasons, and realization of serious brain injury post career is not a good indicator for the long term aspirations of the league.

Plus, fuck Roger Goodell and the greedy owners who prop him up.

While true it is making it less watchable for me. Due to FF and the misconception that offense is what keeps the ratings up there is a fricking pass interference call all the damn time. To me is seems to be getting worse and not better with all this ticky tac stuff.

Thinking about this more, I think the popularity has peaked, and the quality of play is dipping. I don't think the sport will do an absolute nose dive any time soon. The marketing is too good, and ESPN/NFL Network will always have a place for football fanatics.

The brain injury problem makes me hesitant to push a son to play football like my dad to me, and the lack of quality product will inevitably hurt ticket sales.
