What's pissed me off most about Christmas from a parent perspective is that kid's expect quantity and in today's world, more is really fucking expensive. I can buy my daughter the phone she has been wanting, but for an iPhone SE, I'm dropping $400 and its her ONLY present as far as I'm concerned. But that is going to piss her off because you lose the ability to open a lot of presents on Christmas morning. The marketing of technology to kids is ridiculous because they know you are going to buy this shit (drones, phones, ipads, etc.) and there is nothing you can do about it, because if you don't buy it, then the kids aren't keeping up with their peers and get shit from them. And yes, I try to teach frugality as much as I can, but I always feel I'm in this insane uphill battle.

If you don't like Christmas, you're probably a crazy person or a murderous dope.

Spaulding is looking to take everyone down with her into a pit of depression and self hate.

Not good.

If a kid "expects" quantity for Christmas, then the parents must have done MANY things for the kid(s) to think that way.

He's calling Hoffy a terrible parent there, not Spaulding. Don't make me get seacrest in this thread to spell it out for you.

It is usually the parent and not the kid. The parent doesn't think they've done enough if there aren't a thousand presents under the tree. That's why the kids expect it. I've been guilty of it.

I'm not sure your angle on this. Christmas is a government recognized holiday that by the letter is a religious holiday but by spirit is a national holiday; otherwise, marketers would have a limited demographic to sell to and that is bad for business.

Yeah? My kids' friends are running up crazy credit debt so that their kids can have thousands of presents, so I have to deal with, "why did Grace get an iPhone 7 and a new bike and a..." Sure you can tell them that you are saving for college and they will thank me later, but right now they just don't care. Or its just a girl thing maybe?

So, why don't you just buy the phone and let the chips fall where they may?

Why do that then? My kids understand the value of a dollar. $400 = one big gift. Expect smaller rest of way.
