the american pitbull is bred to be protective and to also hate other dogs. its pure genetics. i have a few friends with them but they got them when they were in their 20's and these dogs are pushing 10 and are basically gentle giants. he won't be getting more.

as much as pits are close to the worst dog on the planet, the worst dog is the pug. its just boils my blood to see one of these genetic calamities

There are certainly plenty that want to kill other dogs, but we've successfully placed close to a thousand pits into homes with other animals. Rescues generally aren't going to pull dogs that don't get along with other dogs, since they are incredibly hard to place and take up a spot that can be used to save more adoptable dogs.

Fuck a high strung standard poodle. There's this big brown cocksucker in my neighborhood named Fido. The owner is this dumb broad who let's it run off leash in the park behind my house. Every time it sees me running it comes bounding over like a fucking lunatic, barking and stripping its teeth. It's nearly knocked me down on a couple occasions and once it grabbed my jacket in its teeth. I told its owner I was going to start carrying mace and when this fucker came at me I wasn't going to mace the dog, I was going to mace her.

When I was relating this story to my cousins at Christmas they all laughed like "JORR got bothered by a poodle    " as if this thing was some kind of teacup sitting on Paris Hilton's lap. Fido is as big as a German Shepherd and as mean as any pitbull.

I'll agree with you that, imo, poodles are about as insane as any breed, and they do sometimes come in the size you suggest.

That said, pitbulls (which isn't a breed, it's a cacophony of semi-related breeds) get essentially all the press though ... and with good reason.
Also, they do seem to have an inordinate percentage of careless, callous, and/or brainless owners, so that's probably part of it.

What JORR said.

The issue is that one side thinks they're all rabid killers and the other side says it's the owners, not the breed. Both lines of thought are stupid. They can be good dogs with the right owner but they can still snap due to things that aren't in anyone's control. When other dogs snap, people get bit. When a pitbull snaps, people die. They're basically land sharks.

The thing is though that the studies indicate that while pit bull attacks are near the high end for dogs they aren't really worse than many large breed dogs especially factoring in the total number of them that exist.

I'll focus on the "Die" part because he said it.

Also, that site has some serious bias issues. I have no doubt that pit bulls are a bigger problem then most dogs but realistically we should ban all dogs of a certain size if we want to ban pit bulls. Good to see you on the "Ban things that are dangerous" bandwagon!

I think you can read the site and understand. I mean, literally everything on there basically says "Kill all pit bulls".

Sorry about that...yes, they do have an agenda. Obviously, I see now that wasn't your intention, but this is what I was referencing in my first post. Generally each side has their own stats that have been debunked or allegedly debunked by some other study and it goes nowhere. That's why I always try to suggest spending less time listening to the media or googling stuff and just actually spend some time with actual pitbull type dogs. I get that not everyone has the time or cares that much, but it's pretty eye opening.

I don't care enough to argue either, but I know people who have bred and trained American Staffordshire Terriers for 40+ years. Their dogs have never attacked anybody. Shitty dogs start with shitty owners.

No need to apologize. That person really knows how to do optimization and it's hard to get around it. That person was supposedly bit by a dog and then it took over their life on a path to destroy all pit bulls. Just reading the site it becomes clear that this person is somewhat obsessed.

If you remove pit bulls another dog would take it's place and then suddenly that would be the problem. The final solution is only having dogs that a person can pick up and punt when they threaten them.

Banning the breeding of pit bulls is a ban.

I don't think we should ban cigarettes, I just don't think we should make any more of them. The cigarettes that exist already can still exist!

Exactly.. If I wanted a black and tan guard dog and my Muni banned Dobermans and Rotts I could go get a Beuceron. No pit bulls well how about a bullmastiff. There are plenty of big dogs that can be bred and treated to be pitbull replacements. Its never ending.

And the only dogs that ever got me real good was a freaking toy poodle and a corgi Chihuahua mix.. Nasty little creature.

I was going to qualify that post "with at the risk of stereotyping", because you are right, there are definitely responsible breeders, but I meant more that shitty owners are more likely to go through breeders, because in general it's much easier to get one - no interviews/background checks/home visits/references etc. Again - I know there are responsible breeders, like the ones you know, but the majority don't do the due diligence they should and are just looking for an easy way to make a buck.

I grew up with English Bull Terriers since my mom used to breed them when she lived in Ireland. She got pissed when people called them "pit bulls" here in the States.

I don't like being around pit bulls after dealing with them as a mail carrier during college for a summers. Fuck that.

I have a buddy in Nashville who does a lot of work w/abused pit bulls. I have no desire to visit.
