Just can their asses. Why aren't they doing weekend shows or podcasts? If they weren't fired, why haven't they done anything since the changes happened? What's the hold up?

i guess he can direct rage at mac... but at least mac has a track record of ratings success mixed in with his warts.... as hub would say... the thing no one is talking about is why is mcknight in a daypart? he is an unremarkable replacement level radio host to use a bernstein term

If the station manager is looking for a culture change to "fun radio" then he needed to fire Goff and Bernstein. I'm curious as to the economics of the re-shuffling and whether the station manager fell for sunk cost fallacy. One could safely assume Bernstein is clearing salary higher than Spiegel and Goff combined. Given the investment in Bernstein the station manager felt compelled to keep him on the radio.

Doesn't really make sense to me but radio people are weird. A guy like Bernstein who has checked out mentally and is pulling down a large salary would've been target #1 to hit the road. He's more talented than Grimace/Goff/Replacement X but his salary in a dying industry is unworkable. Sorry, good luck on future endeavors.

KW, it would be interesting to see the math on the entire venture. This could just be a shoot from the hip, gut instinct move to change the tone of the station. But there is also a financial case to be made given the dynamic between ratings and the rates that advertisers pay.

So, if the combined additions of Doink and Mac raise market share by a decent percent, then the additional short term costs may be covered by the higher ad payments. And of course, guys like Mac will draw in more advertisers.

On the Bernstein front, he has a lot more history with the station, so I don't think one failed experiment was enough to show him the door.

Yeah. He'll say he didn't mean it that way when asked. But he clearly did. Mac = Leno in his mind.

Mac brought his ass to the SCORE. Without Mac, he doesn't have this 9 year run.

I thought the story was that Spiegs was living in his parents basement when Mac plucked him from that existence.

Boers and Bernstein had their lunch handed to them by MJH. Once MJH disbanded B&B hit their ratings groove when Mac + Spiegs gave them a solid lead-in and ESPN was shuffling around hosts.

Once W+S gelled and started rolling they were consistently beating B&B/B&G in non-Cubs books.

If I was the station manager, I know I'm already bleeding money from the Cubs radio deal. Bernstein, while very talented, is too expensive and can replaced at fraction of the cost. Plus, once Cubs season kicks off you have listeners gravitating to 670 anyways.

Mac is a buddy and I want to bring him in for a station culture change so that's set in stone. But instead of firing Goff and Grimace, I would've kept Parkins and Spiegel together and then paired Mac with Grote.

Grote has chemistry with Mac, adheres to the intended culture change to "fun" and is most importantly cheap.

Takes a lot of intellectually dishonesty, also.

"my people" he has very few people. This deep connection seems new and manufactured. That Spiegel/Parkins paragraph is a load of crap. He was a complete pouty douche to Parkins, and the tone of that paragraph is as if he had a ton to do with some special/great radio.

I think he called Mac a waffling dinosaur.

Spiegel's content is often boring. Fun was king too. He's a smarmy little soul patchy "poetic" cute phrase writing douche. He might as well put on a beret and get his girlfriend an I'm with stupid t shirt.

I like it when you're feisty

The only good reason to not jettison Bernsie financially could be that his personal advertisement connections are enough to offset a good part of his contract. I seriously doubt Spiegs and Goff brought a single advertiser in or kept them personally.

This midday show probably lasts one year; you'll end up with Spiegel and Rozner middays.

Love him or hate him, there is a huge gap between Bernstein and Spiegel. You're paying both of them their contracts either way. Why not give Bernstein a chance to show why he had one of the most successful radio shows in Chicago sports radio history over a guy who already went through 4 partners and even Mac seemingly didn't want to reunite with? Now, keep in mind Spiegel is also a guy who calls in to work multiple times because he loses his voice from a job he cares about more, and he was terrible to Parkins when they started together.

If that piece of garbage shows up on the Score, I won't turn on the station at all. Barry has five thoughts, and you will find out quickly that he just repeats himself over and over. Here are those thoughts:

1) The Cubs told you what they were going to do and they did it. You are not allowed to question them ever again.
2) The fans have forgotten that the Blackhawks brought Chicago three championships, so it's ok if they play like crap.
3) Tiger Woods almost won.
4) Baseball doesn't need to change its pace of play. Jon Lester told us that. Just lower ticket prices and build more little league fields, and it will all be ok.
5) The Bears suck top to bottom.

Rinse repeat.

It's all fine and dandy that Spiegel can write this heartfelt little piece, but what fantasy land does he live in? No one is mourning over Matt Spiegel being gone. No one really cares except Spiegel.

I think he could actually do himself a lot of good by realizing that none of us are that important in the whole scheme of things. Might help his insecurity too.

Didn't one of the industry knowledgeable people here calculate that they had about 5,000 people listening to the Score at peak times? Maybe I am mis remembering. It's not like throngs of people are gnashing their teeth over Score changes.

Well, its not overtly insulting, lIke Goff's work. But Spiegel, in general, is this overly emotional, sappy drama queen. I do think a lot of us can be too cynical and "tough" sometimes, but come on - there's a limit. And Spiegel went over the limit a long time ago. It also comes off as sooooo self-important.

From my perspective, it's too bad because he has decent sports thoughts.

I think it's more insulting than Goff. It's all manufactured bullshit. It's like that engagement post. I'm gonna say all the right social things, I'm sensitive and strong, it's gonna be so great, cuz I'm so great, and righteous, unique, and special. I'm doing it right. I feel things so deeply. My fans! Our connection! PUKE!!!! He's either full of shit or Ellen Burstyn wandering around on stage in a red dress at the end of Requiem for a Dream.

I'm in touch with my aggression too!

for all the Mr. Sensitive act, there are three women who got sick of that shit very quickly when they got to know him intimately

And the fights wouldn't be for the entire show. They would have civilized sports talk as well. Obviously.

It was a miss by the SCORE radio execs. That would have been the best move. Both new shows would have been good.

Fighting with management is a sure fire ratings producer over the past 30 years. Its fun for the listeners and provides a greater loyalty to the host.

Because even if Bernstein "turns it around" the mid-day wasn't broken. And I'm not going to re-sign him for whatever salary demands he may have unless it's a massive discount.

So I'll need two significant events to occur: 1) Bernstein delivers ratings 2) Bernstein takes a large pay cut

Just rip off the Bernstein band-aid and be done with it. As a station manager I need to hit my numbers. I'd just roll with Spiegs as he was delivering ratings at a lower salary. I don't care about Bernstein's potential or ability to rebound. He's old, bad and expensive. CUT.

No hetero male wants to listen to a sensitive man giving them sports thoughts every day. We want our sport thoughts from real men like a Murph,Mike North or Coppock.

Was he really delivering ratings though? Nearly everyone thought that Parkins was the one who was driving the show in a successful way.

You know it pains me to say this but the Score is better with Dan Bernstein at it. He has to be in the correct role as the iconoclast broadcasting in frustration surrounded by his inferiors.

I'm an unapologetic Speigal guy.

I realize you have to occasionally live with him playing the role of the guitar player on the stair in Animal House. I find the rest of his work enjoyable.

Right. It just seems like a big deal here and with the hosts because we are weird, and it is the hosts' livelihood. No one is standing around the water cooler at work talking about Score changes... or if they are, there are very few.
