my parents are getting us one of these for a housewarming gift for some odd reason.

my father in law has one and he loves it. I smoke a lot of foods for my parents when they ask and he knows i love stick burning in my normal smoker but he thinks he could get more out of me if i had a more set and forget smoker. these are probably one of the better pellet poopers out there.

anyhoo. they are normally a grand everywhere. but costco has a bunch of them in coralville, ia for 650.

we are going to pick it up tomorrow.

I’m sure it’s a great smoker and I hope you enjoy it.

But it feels like pellet smokers take the fun out of the experience.

its why i will not let my horizontal stick burner go. but with 3 kids and all sorts of crap going on having something that i could still utilize would be nice. i can keep my stick burner going about 4-5 hours without touching it during the summer. int he winter its way less efficient.

so i'm up to 3. i have a bradley smoker (that i found on the side of the road with a busted door) that i fixed up and does all my cold smoking and jerky making.

Yeah, no doubt. I’ve thought about getting one too - just to set up and let go when I don’t have time to watch it.

I might still.

Is this similar to a Traeger? My friend loves his but like you said, it kinda takes the fun out of it - good to set and forget but part of smoking is the constant care and feeding.

I have been looking at these types and they sure are attractive for reasons mentioned. I can see the taking the fun out of it angle but I don't have time to tend all day and I sure am not going to get up in the night to tend a smoker. You can just say not enough dedication.

I think you answered your first question in your third sentence.

Sounds like a complement about your skills. :D

One might also say "sensible". Fun's fun 'til it ain't fun.

i helped a buddy shop for one a year ago. we did some pretty extensive research. traeger was like the original. they pioneered the pellet game. but they've been surpassed by others in my opinion. the 2 more popular better ones are louisiana and green mountain. he found deal on the green mountain daniel boone.

Yeah but you can get the traegger one shaped like a pig... had thought of getting a traeger (non porcine) at one time. I think I got an egg instead if I’m remembering right. Different concept/item but it was a decision that since the wife isn’t in too smoked foods I was better with this. Not sure it was right decision.

3.5 hours in smoker, 1.5 hours in covered pan, then 1/2 hour uncovered.

i rerubbed after covering and then tossed them in sauce.

Can you give more details? Why covered in a smoker?

pellets ain't cheap apparently. they went in the oven for the hour and a half.

smoked with a competition blend. its like hickory, cherry, and maple. meh. rather had apple. temp wise it was 260.

That's what your mouth/keyboard says. Your hands say different.
