I was suspicious of his motives because his play was in decline and I was ignorant of the work he was doing off the field. After 2 years it's kinda hard not to be aware of his work if you're paying attention in any way.

I'd just guess the kneeling isn't intended to STOP policing policies that disproportionately hurt minorities, but I would suspect the protests were meant to raise awareness of the problem for persons who might not have been aware of them already. Also, raise awareness for solutions.

I'd have to say they have been successful to some extent in raising awareness. I quoted a post above as some anecdotal evidence.
