And I’m just as sure that players aren’t all that happy with the double standard of the NFL wanting people to be willing to go out and sacrifice their bodies for entertainment right up until the NFL decides something done under that guise isn’t kosher using the illusion of ‘player safety’ as the back drop.. when what they’re really trying to do is avoid further legal issue because they don’t want to admit this is a violent sport, and they don’t want to take care of vets from the past that they already allegedly lied to.

Of course the Bears look bad. They run a business. We live in a time where it is popular to hate big business and anything tied to it, success, etc. The Bears are absolutely protecting against precedent. And they should be. These sports leagues have already surrendered a ton to players and agents. The NBA is joke now.

The Bears always have their rookies signed. They have a point on this.

And Roquan can have a point too. But personal responsibility is still a thing. If he cannot see himself playing football without guarantees against a bad hit, then he can go do something else. The real issue isnt the Bears. If players and agents want to truly guarantee against this stuff then they can take their fight to the league and their rules or put a lot of personal practice time in to making sure they dont get dinged.

But he won't have to because the Bears will eventually pay him. You cannot be in their position and win in the court of public opinion. They are evil.

On the other hand we literally just had a thread asking why the public now seems to side with management in worker disputes, with sports as a prime example. We really don’t live in a time where it is popular to hate big business.

It is one of the defining factors of the current time we live in. It's why 30% of the electorate and one of the two major political parties are seriously flirting with socialism.

I have no idea what thread you are referring to.

The Bears are not going to and have not withheld money from guys who get suspended for infractions like this. They just dont want to want to be forced to. It's about precedent. And every team is watching this hoping they dont cave. They will.

So the Bears are coming off as shitheads here, but lets be honest about this whole thing. IMO, this would not be a problem if the NFL had rules that people could actually read and make sense out of.

surprised Smith is the first defensive player. the NFL's new helmet rule this season--despite its prima facie simplicity-- could prove a confusing mess. The players most likely to get dinged by it (get fined and/or suspended after the fact by the NFL, beyond the in-game 15 yd penalty) would be defensive players making tackles.

We will all have a good laugh about this when he has his first 4 sack game.

We live in a time when workers are standing up for themselves and there is blow back against the ridiculous but prevalent thought that employment = employer providing charity by giving a job to the worker.

I believe it was the Bills with Tremaine Edmunds. He apparently has the same agent as the Smith, so that's one reason they're looking for the same thing.

You have to know that it is the idiot Bears to be the team that can't sign its number one draft pick because of something like this. It is asinine. Smith was supposed to be a difference maker on defense on an improving team and he isn't even on the team learning its defense. This is all on the Bears management for making this an issue. They once again have figured out of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
