I've been doing a lot more cooking at home and am looking to get a good set of knives. I know there are some good cooks on here. Any recommendations?

Franky, smart ass answers aside I am also interested in this. So many great looking things on the market. I’d like some real reviews and opinions.

Just get a Swiss Army Knife. It's got everything.

I have a nice block set of Cutco knives that have worked great for me. A lot of people have told me that they are over rated
but I've not had an issue with them. You can also mail them back to get re-sharpened. I am by no means a big chef or anything
but they seem to be pretty good quality to me. Been using the serrated steak knives for 10 years and haven't had to send them in for
any kind of sharpening yet.

Really good set

Depends on what you like. I have a wusthof classic set and I like it a lot. Their knives are a little heavier. Victorinox is lighter but suppose to be good. I'm not a fan of straight handle knives.

After reading Kitchen Confidential I took Bourdain's advise and have been quite pleased. This and a good filet knife will handle pretty much anything IMO. Spend money on those and get a cheaper block for general use.

Bourdain still loves the knife he first recommended when his best-selling memoir Kitchen Confidential came out in 2000. Bourdain ranted passionately about how much he despised knife sets. He wanted home cooks to forget about all those big blocks full of expensive knives they'd never need and just get one really good chef's knife: the Global G-2 Chef's Knife.

My favorite episode. I love the part where a piece accidentally flies off and JG adlibs about using it for spearfishing.

That's kind of what I've been reading. Go ahead and spend big on the chef's knife and fill in the rest.

One thing I found strange is steak knives. When newly single again I needed some in a pinch. I bought a cheap Farberware set at Walmart for less then $10-15. I’ll be damned if I’m not still using them and they are sharp. When they wear out I might just go back and do that again.

MAC MTH is suppose to be a great knife. I don't like Global, they are too light weight and I like bolsters. It's personal preference.

I prefer the thinner and harder blades on Japanese knives. Shun Kershaw is great. I also agree you don't need a set. Buy a chef's knive (or Santoku), a boning knife, and maybe a bread knife/slicer, and you're done.

My wife and I got Wusthofs as a wedding gift. They are pretty nice and solid. I do need to get the stove out and sharpen a couple of them however.

The Cutco knives are absolutely incredible.
I thought they were a multi-level marketing scam but they work better than any knives I've ever used.
Don't get pushed into buying more knives than you need.
You can buy more later.
They are definitely worth the money.

Mail order something really good from Japan.

I went to a 100 yen store years ago and brought a bunch of knives. They were Japanese steel and still have them. They're excellent. But they're not a set.

Just go to a good restaurant supply store and get a good chef’s knife, a slicing knife, a boning knife and a paring knife. You’ll spend very little money and get good quality knives that will last many years.

Restaurant supply stores are great for all things kitchen. Just ask Juan.

Simple. I tell my wife to get her ass in the kitchen and let me know when my plate is ready.
