It's not really making trouble from my perspective. I can see why it would be from a team perspective

The Patriots have wasted six figures on attorneys for something that they could have foreseen with Hernandez.

We have NO knowledge of any other pick that is represented by this agency having the same issue with another client of theirs that has already signed.

Would a Boilermarker Rick be as tough to spot as long term gay? I think a well disguised BR would be a fun mult to operate.

The team can explicitly make anthem protests the exception or write in any other exceptions. Make that public.

What was I uninformed about?

Here is a simple question.

After Aaron Hernandez was arrested, did the Patriots get to stop paying him?

The fact is that if a player commits a crime so severe that they would be like an Aaron Hernandez situation then the team will not be paying them.

Not that I'm aware of.

If you want contract protection(we will have to wait and see if that is what the issue is ), from behavior that you may freely choose to engage in yourself, then that is way beyond a red flag.

And every contract prohibits some behaviors outright like riding a motorcycle and things like that.

The fact is, the Patriots are still fighting that battle.

IF Roquan Smith doesn't want to be responsible for his own behavior, then it shouldn't be on someone else to take responsibility for him.

No money spent on attorney's fees are wasted

This is not a fact. Everything I saw online only mentioned it as an incredibly unlikely hypothetical and now we are over a year later and the Hernandez estate has done nothing to push for it. Where have you seen that the Patriots are fighting the battle to not have to pay him everything he was owed had he not been arrested for murder?

The only lawsuit I see from the Hernandez estate is a CTE based lawsuit. There is nothing about the Patriots owing him any money because he was declared not to have committed murder. Since you are so sure I am uninformed I would welcome a link to that.

I imagine that we will find out what the actual issue was soon.

I can understand a Tank Johnson or Aaron Hernandez asking for protection from their likely criminal behavior. I can't imagine a guy that hasn't been a criminal wanting protection from criminal activity. Either way the Bears can write in criminal activities and anthem protests as things they can go after his guarantees for. Concede everything else.

Did the Bears put that same type of clause in every player that they have contract? IF not, then WHY in the hell did they single him out? If the guy has major issues in the first place, then draft someone else who doesn't. This just does not add up to me.

Mully and Haugh are reporting that it's about on the field issues that don't include the anthem.

The reports seem to be he doesn't want the team to be able to take away guaranteed money for actions that happen on the field outside the play on the field. So, if he punches a guy or throws a helmet at a ref the Bears can't go after that money.

That just seems stupid. At this point I think the Bears should stay strong on that.

Agreed.

Hey Roquan, you can't act like a petulant child with no consequences.

As we discussed several pages earlier, no one publicly seems to know what the real issues are. Smith's camp isn't negotiating publicly and the Bears are speaking scattershot through their usual media lapdogs.

And I believe that it was raised on the Score yesterday that four other teams have agreed to this same clause.

Imo this is nothing more than like Joey Bosa going after an incompetent, poorly staffed family business on a contract matter.

Yup. Bears are easy marks since they have such a reputation for incompetence and buffoonery.

Of course they aren't; they'd look pretty foolish if they say they are negotiating Smith's right to misbehave.

The Bears have no interest in dragging their first round pick's reputation through the mud if they want him to contribute to the attempted rebuild.

Well, sure, Mully and Haugh were basically serving as the Bears propaganda ministers earlier this morning. "His agents aren't serving his interests," "Roquan needs to get involved," etc.

Correct. I'm sure all Bears beat reporters have asked his agent for an interview...and were denied.
