I am encouraged by his rate of improvement. He was a lot better at the end of the season than he was at the beginning. That says a lot of good things about him--notably that he is a hard worker who can translate what the coaches are teaching him in the film room and at practices into improved physical performance. This ability to rapidly or immediately grasp and implement instruction is both crucial for someone at his career stage and somewhat rare. From a mental perspective, then, I think he will be a much more polished and dangerous player next year. Physically, he still has significant mechanical issues to overcome with his throwing motion. Hopefully he can successfully address that area in the off season. Some guys can take care of that in a few months, some guys can't. But he's in a great position to succeed given his natural athleticism, coachability, and (evidently) excellent work ethic.

Well said.

I was really encouraged by the fact that his QB rating went up in the 2nd half and was way up in the 4th quarter this past game. He does not seem bothered by big moments.

The more I think about it the more I am happy with him as a second year player. He has to improve but it's hard to imagine him worse than a league average quarterback now. He clearly can make all the throws you need to as a quarterback though he was inconsistent with those. The last two drives, in a win, would have been considered the highlight of his career to this point.

13-20 for just a shade under 200 yards and a td in the second half. Place those numbers blindly and everyone would be talking about what a winner that QB is.

They have their quarterback for a long time. He clearly does not get rattled and can make plays. He got them in position to win that game after they lost the lead. It was just bad luck that they lost.

I'll also add....he appears to be coachable...and we appear to have good coaching in place to do it.

It's unlikely that he will ever be in the class of Mahomes and that alone will make some fans hate him. Others just don't want to be wrong about him sucking so they'll move the goalpost.

I wanted to make sure that the moment wouldn't be too big for him like a Kirk Cousins. I know he had the touchdown drives in the 4th against the Dolphins and Packers at home. There is a different kind of pressure being tied than there is trailing though. The score was tied in both games. Seeing the look in his eyes in Green Bay and his performance made me unsure if he could handle it. He stepped up against the Eagles in the 4th and had the look in his eyes that said the moment wasn't too big. That was encouraging.

I remember Watson was the qb of choice last year as the next great quarterback. Then he got hurt and is no longer talked about in that way. Not wishing anyone bad luck but Mahomes just might end up with the same happening to him. The NFL is a marathon and not a sprint. (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is just a baby as are Watson and Mahomes. Declaring Mahomes the next coming of Joe Montana is ridiculous.

I agree with your thoughts on this topic, but don't you think Pace is obligated to pay him? If he doesn't pay him, he's pretty much admitting that me made a mistake in trading up for him.

I’m always in favor of bold, innovative moves even if they don’t work out and I think it would be awesome if Pace came out and said he loves Mitch, wanted to get an extension done, but looked at the landscape of the NFL and knew it wasn’t a good idea to give a big contract out to even a good QB, and that’s why they went a different way.

Pace has a few years to figure out if (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is worth a big contract. He could still use the tag if he needs more time.
