Burton’s time on the sideline should give the rest of the tight ends — predominantly Shaheen and Ben Braunecker — valuable reps to show that the Bears will be fine at a position that is important to Nagy’s offense.

Monday, though, both of those tight ends had issues with drops.

“I just think we need to continue train tracking the ball all the way in,” Gilbride said. “And that’s across the board with the tight ends. It showed up today with Braunecker, but it showed up with some other guys as well. We’re getting better at it, but it takes a while to dial in and see the football into your hands. But we’re getting better.”

Braunecker did a nice job of positioning himself in front of Kyle Fuller on one of his routes in team drills, but couldn’t hang on to a Mitch (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky pass. Shaheen couldn’t corral a throw down the sideline from Chase Daniel. Braunecker, re-signed for his fourth season in Chicago, has had a few notable drops in camp, and Shaheen hasn’t made the same impact we saw at this time last summer or in the spring.

Sounds like Shaheen is still a bust

Buddy of mine is down there today and he said "I know it's just practice but Shaheen is not very impressive."

Everyone is saying that (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky understands defenses and what he's doing better but he's still playing mediocre on the practice field. It's about time that the improved knowledge translates into improved quarterback play.

We will find out pretty quickly if Mitch is the guy. If he's not would they pull the trigger next off season and bring in a vet? Have not seen a franchise QB in my lifelong Bears fandom, but have seen plenty of "game manager" QB's that did just enough to win games when pared with a dominant defense, not sure if Nagy is gonna go that route when it looks like a smart vet QB with an accurate arm could put up huge numbers in this system.

It’ll be fun when you come to the realization he’s just not that good. Took the Cutler folks years but I think you’ll come around by December.

Good veteran QBs rarely hit the market.

We will definitely find out. Last year was a good start but we need more than that.

Mitch is the guy. He would have to take a massive step backwards for Pace to not consider him as such.

A game manager ain't gonna cut it, He's got to get better at deep passes from the pocket.

He wasn't a game manager and he was league average throwing deep passes. Besides there are only about 30 deep passes thrown every season. He thinks too much. He needs to play without thinking. The numbers say that he was a better player when he couldn't think and just had to play.

I'm still on the fence with him, he's got no excuses this year. He's gotta play better, this team wins the SB if he's above average.

He needs to be great most of this year. Leave no doubt and destroy the rest of the league.

He has three (including 2019) of a rookie contract. They should be drafting someone in the 3-4 round area by 2021 regardless of if Mitch is good or bad, just so that they are insured against an outrageous contract demand but three years is a long time.

:?: Not sure what you meant here, but Mitch is entering the third year of a four-year contract. This is his make-or-break year in terms of a massive extension. A prudent long-term strategy would have involved selecting a QB in the 2019 draft.

Unless he regresses, they're going to give him the 5th year.

I can't envision a scenario where the fifth year isn't invoked.

True. But I don't think the Bears want to enter year 4 without being certain about what they're going to do with (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. Nevertheless, his performance in the coming season might prevent clarity on this issue.

Mitch's performance in the coming season may solidify an extension for him going forward.

You will know the thinking of the team decision makers if they exercise 5th year and do not extend instead next off season.

I really do not get the negativity regarding (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. He's gotten progressively better since they drafted him. What no one talks about either is his great mobility that very few NCL quarterbacks have and it showed very well in their wins last year. Frankly, I am more worried about the health of the offensive line rather than whether (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is going to be good this season. Its time also, for their offense to get Cohen more involved in the passing game. Getting Montgomery will also, I hope, involved in a more attacking offense.

I see the Bears among the leaders in total offense this season especially with the dominant defense forcing turnovers and getting better field position as well a good group of wide receivers. Still wish that they had a Marshall type dominant receiver but you can't have everything I guess.

I would think that Bears fans would discuss the Baltimore Ravens history of winning with bum quarterbacks like Trubinsky. He was a three year bench rider at North Carolina for a reason and his arm and brain haven't gotten better yet.

Fuck Kyle Long. If he had a different last name he would have been launched three years ago.
