Saying they should have taken Watson or Mahomes is lazy. What they shouldn't have done is bid against themselves to move up one spot. That was amateur hour.
Correct. Giving up that much draft capital at the time was incredibly risky if not stupid.
Couple that with the near certainty that Mitch isn't the guy is a franchise altering, fireable offense
So the only thing that makes me think twice about saying fire Pace is the defense. He whiffed hard on offense and failed miserably. He swung for the fences on defense and connected. Kind of conflicted. At best it's a C- grade for him I guess for me, the minus being for the dumbass trade on draft night.
What Pace failed miserably on was not building a decent offensive line as far as I am concerned. I still think that it is too early to make a decision on (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. Let him finish the season without shackles on him. It he fails thoroughly, then I wouldn't be against going after another guy. I just think that the guy is in his 3rd year and has not failed as yet if people are honest about it.
I do remember when that draft happened and there was not a consensus on who the best quarterback in the draft was. In fact, Mahomes was pretty much a 3rd choice of the three. I wanted Watson and not (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky because he reminded me then of Russell Wilson and still does. I also was concerned with the lack of experience that (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky had in college. So, yeah, Pace made a mistake as it turned out but it is bullshit to say that most of the football world knew that Mahomes was the guy. Give (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky the Chiefs coaching staff, and see if things would be much different. I sort of doubt it as it turns out.
I still see (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky as a younger, slightly smaller Rothlesburger. Not pretty but tough and mobile. I may be wrong but so what. Its only a game and GMs make mistakes all of the time.
