Question:
Could Matt Nagy have challenged the (Zach Ertz) touchdown play to see if it was offensive pass interference (against Kyle Fuller)? That would have been a smart challenge. I’m not sure why he didn’t throw the flag. Was that play reviewable? — Keith L., Wichita, Kan.
Biggs' reply:
Many readers were wondering the same thing and because it was a touchdown, the Bears were not able to challenge the play. It looked obvious that Eagles tight end Zach Ertz was guilty of offensive pass interference, but Nagy had no recourse in that situation.
What is he talking about? I know all scoring plays are reviewed (presumably to confirm a catch or breaking the plane, etc), but is he saying a team can't challenge something that happened on a scoring play?
Yes, and he's right.
"Only the Replay Official or the Senior Vice President of Officiating or his or her designee may initiate a review of a play:
that begins after the two-minute warning of each half;
throughout any overtime period;
when points are scored by either team;
But here's the thing. Throw that flag anyway, stomp up and down. Make that review ref take his time looking at it.
