MadBum at 5 yrs 100Million is a bargain. He's going to get more than that.

Sox should front load the offer to MadBum. 5 years, $120 million. $30 million in 2020 & 2021, $20 million in 2022. Then give him an opt out or he can stay on the Sox and collect $18-20 million in 2023 and 2024.

I completely agree with this, but I think he'll get closer to $125 million from SOMEbody. Still....do it.

Could be. Then make it a $130million 5 year deal and split it up. Frontload the deal so he can make $80 mil over the next three seasons when the Sox core should be in their prime, and then he still might get a megadeal or he can stick around and collect another $30-40mil from a team that could still be quite good.

They already offered nearly $120 to Wheeler. Get it done Rick, Jerry, Kenny.

Remember when the Cubs replaced Maddux with Jose Guzman and Greg Hibbard? It worked out okay for a year.

C'mon JOrr. You know I want the Sox to win (and spend) as much as anyone. But do you really think the best course of action is to pay over $1 million per game for a guy who takes the ball every 5th day?

Maybe I'm being naive or maybe this is a "back in my day" type moment, but I just happen to believe
that the Sox could spend $200 million plus on two or three other players that could absolutely help them win.

I don't necessarily want them to shell out $40 mil for 7 to Cole or Strasburg, but what I really don't want is them tying up about $20 mil for 5 for some Danks-like turd, let alone two of them.

Right.

The market is what it is for stars.

You either pay it or you bargain shop.

Sure you'll occasionally find a steal, but more often than not you'll get Danks and Gavin Floyd.

I don't disagree. I just find this amusing coming from the guy who loved Javier Vazquez.

I didn't really love Vazquez, but he was a pretty good pitcher.

I didn't really love Vazquez, but he was a pretty good pitcher.

For regular season, he was..."pretty good". Big game....batting practice. The problem was...he was counted on and paid to be a #2 starter.

When they first got him he was their fifth guy. Quintana is a good comp for him, although Vazquez had more dominating stuff. I think Vazquez's biggest issue was that he wanted to throw too many different pitches.

While I think this is highly possible, this would be a big shift in priority for the players union. Historically, they've given zero fucks about the younger players....all about the veterans. The players have done a good job of making this issue visible to fans and the general public where I think it could give them a PR edge. I think most fans really hate seeing emerging stars held down in the minors longer than needed....just not convinced this is THE hill the Players union wants to die on.

Vets are getting replaced by 6 yr controlled young-uns

That's why there's no motivation for a journeyman to stick his neck out for the next generation of guys coming up.

Exactly.
The only thing the owners might be getting wise to is $25Million+ for players over 35 years old. Still plenty of money being shelled out to players age 27-35. They could care less what the rookies make.

For whatever reason, if the union DOES negotiate this....the owners will find another way to shaft the players.

Good for them.

World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg on Monday agreed to terms with the Washington Nationals on a seven-year, $245 million contract, according to sources, six weeks after opting out of the final four years of his contract with the Nationals.

I'm the first person to acknowledge, the market is the market and that's what you pay but 7 years for any pitcher?

No. Way.
For every Greg Maddux, there's Barry Zito, Kevin Brown, Mike Hampton. This is insanity.

Wheeler was 5 years....I can live with MadBum for 5 years. 2 of those will probably be painful and regretful, but we'll have to roll the dice and deal with it.

If Jerry doesn't like it....tough shit. Draft and Develop pitchers better and you won't be in this position. Or when you do get this generation's Randy Johnson, don't waste your roster with asswipes like Adam Dunn, Adam LaRoche, and James Shields.

I don't agree with a lot of what that scout said but yeah, they probably are a year away. To say that Moncada and Giolitto haven't proven themselves is stupid on the guy's part. We will see but all I know is that the White Sox should make the play-offs next season if they add three or four good pitchers two starters and two relievers. There is no reason not to.

Bummer is the key to being a legit contender along with one other lefty. They also should add a another left handed reliever and a right handed closer/set-up guy. They can go cheaper for a starting outfielder but pitching is critical.

I really question if Ozuna was a serious candidate in the first place.
