Teams just don’t repeat leading the league in turnovers and other than the Legion of Boom they don’t repeat leading in PPG much either. NME is right that they’re not playing as well, but what vegan is getting at is also right, that there’s nothing really illustrative in pointing that out. They have injuries and the outlier year in turnovers has returned to normalcy, all while under a new D coordinator. Okay, now what? Hope they’re healthier next year, they get luckier with turnovers again, and they get better the 2nd year under Pagano.

I think you play the game in front of you. It doesn't matter if the defense blows a lead like they did in a high scoring game against the Dolphins last year or like they did in a low scoring game against the Eagles in the playoffs. It's not unreasonable to ask or expect a great defense to get a critical stop.

We have a philosophical difference then. That's fine. I think your blind spot is if you want to say it's reasonable to expect the D to get a critical stop then it's equally reasonable to expect the O to provide some a reasonable margin of error. The d has been so good these two years and the offense bad that we're implicitly expecting the d to both stop offenses and score on d as well. That's unreasonable.

It was unreasonable to expect the defense to get 50 takeaways. I just don't think it's unreasonable to expect a defense that we both believe is elite to get a key stop.

I will agree with you about the offense. They averaged nearly 30 points a game last year until the Rams exposed them. They've generally sucked every game since. You have to be able to score more than 17 points or just score points in the first half.

I am not willing to gloss over the fact that Nagy’s involvement with the defense is basically zero and that had a very detrimental effect since he provided no continuity to ease the transition from Fangio to Pagano. I think that explains a lot of the issues the defense has had, that and the aforementioned complacency by Pace regarding the front seven.

It is a bit ridiculous that Nagy is expected to only really coach the offense while leaving defense (and I reckon special teams as well) to guys who have to be basically head coaches in their own right. Then it’s doubly ridiculous that Nagy cannot even innovate the offense at all from his first game of his first season despite the offense being his only real priority.
