maybe shakes can break this one down for us:
In a four-team deal, Atlanta has acquired Houston’s Clint Capela and Nene for Evan Turner, the lottery-protected first-round pick it owns from Brooklyn and a 2024 second-round pick. The full four-team trade is Houston receiving Robert Covington, Jordan Bell and a second-round pick; Minnesota receiving Turner, Malik Beasley, Juancho Hernangomez, Jarred Vanderbilt and the Brooklyn first-round pick; and Denver receiving Gerald Green, Keita Bates-Diop, Shabazz Napier, Noah Vonleh and Houston’s first-round pick. It should be noted that the Hawks will have to waive a player for this deal to be official because they have 16 players right now. The obvious candidate is Chandler Parsons, who is in California rehabbing from his injuries sustained in a car accident. Treveon Graham is a possibility, as well.
Love it for the Hawks! Hawks biggest problem this year has been a complete lack of an NBA center on the roster. They let Dedmon walk over the summer with the hopes that Alex Len could step in and fill the void, but that was a total failure. After about 20 games they decided that Len can only play coming off the bench. Next up was Damian Jones who it turns out is the dumbest player in the NBA. Doesn't know where to stand on the court, doesn't know how to play the game. Next up was Bruno Fernando, a second round project rookie who has no business being in the NBA this year, let alone starting several games.
Hawks need a big guy who can protect the rim and help out the young defensively challenged players on the team (Trae, Collins, Huerter), rim run for dunks in the open floor and off the PnR with Trae and lastly space the floor with outside shooting. Capella checks 2 of those 3 boxes with defense and rim running. He's young and he's signed for long term at under $20m per which is a very good deal.
Hawks have $60m in cap space, but the 2020 FA class looks pretty weak. They weren't going to get a better big than Capella. They would've ended up doing something stupid like giving Andre Drummond $30m per year.
The costs of the deal is next to nothing which makes it even better. Evan Turner is a malcontent and not good enough to play in the NBA at this point in his career. The frist round pick from Brooklyn will be middle of the first round in what is looking to be one of the weakest drafts ever. I think they also gave up a 2nd.
Capella is hurt and may not even play for a while which is fine with me. Next year they'll have a core of..
Capella
Collins
Hunter
Trae
Huerter
Reddish
2020 lottery pick
