everything is relative

That's ultimately what is being advocated.

Good luck with that as your code

No one has said anything like this. An 11 or 12 year old should not be able to make adult and life altering decisions. It's really that simple.

It's clearly not that simple.

Why do you disagree?

Every situation is different. Some gay people have clearly been gay since young childhood. It's not a choice. By puberty, it's pretty clear. This is genetic, chemical. In most situations, you have already been to psych doctors, pediatricians, specialists of all sorts. The child gets a say along the way. Let the child be who they want to be...fixed gender definitions are being redefined. Deal with it.

Surgery can wait til she's 18, imho. But, I'm not an expert...so maybe it's the best option in certain situations.

A good friend of mine's daughter is going through this transition right now. They actually made it into a two part documentary on one of the cable stations last year. Think she started the process at 15 or 16 and to the best of my knowledge the mother wasn't all that uncomfortable with it. She had issues with the daughter but I don't believe that the issues had much to do with her having a sex change.

If the kid wants to paint his nails and dress like Dwyane Wade that's one thing. If the kid wants to grow breasts that's entirely different.

I would argue that you're the one who isn't dealing with it by enforcing the idea that there are specific ways girls feel and specific ways boys feel.

Whatever floats your boat. Not many will argue who's more open minded here.

You think you're open minded but you're promoting a philosophy that clearly isn't.

like I said, the kid grew up in a house where there was a reward for this discovery

A kid has to make a name in the family somehow....the smart one, the athletic one.

A witch is coming to my room and tormenting me every night.

because the breasts do not grow without countravening nature while painting nails is a question of fashion taste

That's a life and body altering decision that a child shouldn't make. Where do you draw the line? Do you get your teenage daughter breast or butt augmentation surgery because she isn't happy with her body? Do you punt on immunizations because your kid read something online? Do you pass on life saving treatment because your 12 year old doesn't want it?

Zion is a gender neutral name to begin with

In fact, it is more frequently used in relation to daughters

I'm sure the celebrity parents chose the name for its historical significance rather than how it sounded and were able to give their child proper counsel on the matter

I'd suspect this boy was told from the age of 3 that he could choose to be a boy or girl.

No it didn't. Those are simple questions. Where do you draw the line as a parent?

There was a time I thought Gabrielle Union was the most beautiful woman on the planet.

She is now 47

what is body altering surgery to a person who has already gone through body altering surgery

I think it's less prevalent and what trans people there are are overrepresented in media.

Also, transitioning is not completely a one-way street, but it sure looks like an expressway at rush hour.

She still looks good for 47. Has she had surgery? She seems like a gym rat.

I think "enhancement" surgery like breast implants or a tummy tuck is quite a bit different than, "Hey doc, turn this wang into a pink taco."

How are you defining "transgender"? If the definition is a girl who thinks she's a boy or vice versa, I'm certainly not arguing such people do not exist. What I'm arguing is that true gender dysphoria is much more rare than a boy believing he is a girl because he likes dolls more than football. If that's your definition of trans, then I'm trans.

The first and most obvious question that a parent should probably ask a child claiming to be the opposite sex is why he or she thinks such a thing. And what do you suppose the answers might be?

We're not talking about "Dad, I'm gay and like boys", we're talking about a sex change at 11 or 12. That's an adult decision.

I agree. If you're gay, you're gay. But when you insist you're something you're obviously not, I think it demands a lot more questioning than simply accepting the insistence.

I feel like I like guys. Normal.

I feel like a girl. Not Normal.

You have a quirky sense of humor so I'm not exactly sure how to take this post. But I'll respond as if it's sincere.

I wouldn't use the word "normal" here at all. That opens up a completely new discussion, i.e. is normal the highest value to which we should aspire?

Neither thing is normal. The first can't be normal, as if it were it would mean the end of the human race. But it's a feeling that really demands no further examination. The guy is attracted to guys. Okay. That's it.

In the case of a boy insisting he is a girl, there are many questions. What is a girl? How do you know how a girl feels?

My knowledge of transgender stuff is limited to a few continuing legal education seminars so I do not consider myself an authority on this subject. What I understand is that a trans person doesn't necessarily believe they are the opposite gender, MANY simply feel their gender identity does not align with their physical sex. On paper that seems like a distinction without a difference, but from what I understand it is a sliding scale. This is a long way of saying not all trans people want to chop their dicks off.

This was your initial statement 'The word "boy" has a meaning. The kid in question is obviously a boy.' This indicates that you believe that only genetics defines gender and therefore the concept of transgender doesn't exist and all adults who feel that way are mistaken.

I don't think anyone is an authority on the subject. It's primarily a political position.

But you're hitting on exactly what I'm saying. The why of it. Why does a person feel their identity doesn't coincide with their physical sex? The obvious answer is because of the smothering and rigid roles that have been imposed by society. That's why indulging such thought is really conservative and narrow minded despite Golden Jet's desire to maintain his progressive bonafides.

Wade is basically agreeing with a ten year old that girls don't play basketball and boys don't wear makeup, instead of correcting the child's ill-informed opinions and opening up his young inexperienced mind.

Yes. You are literally arguing that it doesn't exist.

This was your initial statement 'The word "boy" has a meaning. The kid in question is obviously a boy.' This indicates that you believe that only genetics defines gender and therefore the concept of transgender doesn't exist and all adults who feel that way are mistaken.

How do you define "boy" then?

No I'm not. I'm stating the fact that the child in question is a boy. He may think he's a girl. He may think he feels like a girl, although I don't know how he could possibly know what a girl feels like since he is a boy.

That's an interesting question. If I said the answer included something like "A girl wears dresses and a boy does not" would you agree? What if I said "A girl plays with baby dolls and a boy plays with trucks"? What if I said "A boy has short hair and a girl has long hair"? At least traditionally, those are all fairly widely accepted gender roles.

What happens when a "boy" or "girl" wants to do things not associated with their gender in those questions?
