I think they did about as well as you could hope for the limited number of picks.
I thought there were better players available at each pick but the market didn't agree with me as even Denzell Wimms lasted until 59. My other second round guy, Prince, went in the sixth. Jones fell in the third and the centers that I liked were all over the place.
Johnson is going to be a good player and I think there is consensus across the NFL on that. It's the injuries (and it is a significant concern). Utah has been quietly pumping out really good defensive backfield players over the past half decade and Winningham thinks he is the best of them all. He is the anti Amukamara in his aggressiveness and ability to cause turnovers.
Kmet will be playing a lot from the very beginning. He may not be the guy they announce as the starter but he will get starter minutes. Contrary to other's thoughts, he is athletic, fast and big. He will get bigger. Also, he isn't even a full year into devoting himself entirely to football. I expect the specialized physical training and coaching are going to make an impact.
Mooney fits a role and it is the role the Bears needed. He doesn't have the overall game other WR we all wanted have. He can run a fly pattern and beat a DB. He was fast at the combine but I think he played even faster.
That Pace better be right about the guy from Tulsa because as you saw, there are starters available even in the 4th round
Having Charles Leno and Bobbie Massie as the starting tackles is basically disqualifying the Bears from contention this year. I dont know how the Bears are reconciling that fact with their draft strategy of filling holes with draft picks. If they were just taking the best talent and finding places for them regardless of position, that's fine. That is viable. But to draft for need, which they clearly did with the first two picks, and then totally ignore the giant pressing need that is going to ruin their season? It makes no sense.
They signed Demetrius Harris and Jimmy Graham to play tight end. Now if they think Jimmy Graham is going to be a zero contributor in 2020 then they are probably right, but it does bring up the question of why sign the fucking guy to $10m guaranteed in the first place if they know he cannot play.
I just cant get on with this draft even if I like a lot some of the players they got. Even though they only traded one 2021 draft pick it still feels like they robbed themselves in a way. The work cut out they have cut out for themselves or the next guy in rebuilding this offensive and defensive fronts is immense. They are basically leaving those units in the same condition they found them in when Pace inherited that disaster of a roster from Emery.
