Why don't cloth masks work?

I posted about Bill Nye on my FB page this morning.

He puts on an N95 mask with a lit candle in front of the mask and proceeds to demonstrate how he can't blow out the candle. Neat.

He then proceeds to put on the traditional blue disposable mask and SCREAM at his audience to wear a mask to protect others.

Quite easy to blow out the candle with the disposable blue mask or any cotton/cloth version.

What a fucking medicine show that was.

That’s right asshole you will probably be just fine if you get the virus. You could have it right now with no symptoms and because you go out in public with no mask you are much more likely to give it to someone you know who is vulnerable. I spent seventy hours in planes across five continents in March. Didn't wear a mask once, and only on my flight from Johannesburg to Abu Dhabi were the flight attendants even wearing them. Wound up being fine. Nobody I've been in contact with has had rona either, so I was hardly an asymptomatic carrier. I can also vouch that none of coworkers got it, we're talking about five hundred people doing lots of international travel with no masks. No rona.

Masks are the least economically damaging way of trying to keep the virus at manageable levels. The fight against masks is basically asking for more things to get shut down or severely restricted if things get worse in certain states/cities.

It seems undisputed that wearing a mask is going to lessen droplets going out by some percentage and droplets are how this spreads right?

Or is that disputed?

Why do we cover our mouths or noses when sneezing or coughing?

Seems like people not spreading droplets as much would naturally lead to some reduction of spread.
