A place where tipped servers have to stop what they are doing at the tables and pull your carry-out order together, I'll tip 10%. Not that I carry out from there, but that's what Waffle House adds as standard for all carry-out orders. I'll do that at a place like Katy's Dumplings in Westmont.

Carry out from a place with a mostly dedicated carryout process, no tip. If I go pick up a pizza, I'm not tipping. And obviously not a place like Starbucks even thought the app notifies me every time I go through the drive thru window that I didn't tip. A place like Cheesecake Factory with online ordering and curbside pickup, no way I'm tipping. They have a dedicated cheesecake carryout counter, why the fuck should I tip them?

This is my philosophy as well.

And for those people who are adamant the you should tip when you pick up carryout, where do you draw the line? Are you tipping at McDonalds? How about the person at the deli counter slicing you cold cuts or the cashier and bagger at the grocery store? I tip people whose wages are dictated by tips. And if they give me good service, I tip them well.

I don't think it's complicated. You should always tip at restaurants, you shouldn't tip while getting fast food.

2 scenario's : tip or not tip ?

1.Olive Garden carry out - corporate giant. i order online, i go pick up the shit. i say no tip. if i was sitting there during normal times yes I would tip. but not in this case.

2.Local Sushi joint - i call in my order, they make it, put it in a bag for me, i walk or drive there and pick it up. again I say no tip.

Just admit you're cheap instead of trying to justify your behavior. It's ok, a lot of people are.

Yup

I honestly had no idea about hotel room protocol until about 10 years ago. Now I always make sure to leave some money.

Regarding lack of service at restaurants, I have no problem anymore going out of my way to get a waiter or bartender's attention. For as long as I remember, Mickey Finn's has had bartenders who just refuse to make eye contact. Drives me nuts. That led me to be much more aggressive as a patron.

On the topic of "bad waiters". If you see your waiter a lot, even not at your table, then it's likely not the waiters fault for the poor service. If they disappear for long periods of time then it's likely their fault for the poor service. When the kitchen was going slower than I would like then you make sure they have full drinks and bread.

That is something that really annoys me. That's the number one job of a bartender.

You can name-call all you want but you still haven’t said where you draw the line. Maybe because it opens up all kinds of questions as why don’t you tip in other scenarios? It becomes a very slippery slope.

Nobody has to draw a line when they’ve given examples where they tip and you don’t.

It's not clear who you're addressing here, but I drew a clear line for you.

If you don't have money to tip then don't go out to eat/carry out from a restuarant. Grab McDonald's where tips aren't expected like you mentioned. That's not name calling either, just a simple observation.

I am directly referencing you among others. Why is not tipping at McDonald’s ok but you’re cheap if you don’t tip at a carryout location where I pay for my food and someone behind the counter, not waitstaff, hands me my food? What is the fundamental difference?

It's funny...whenever I go to a bar that isn't a regular spot for me, first thing I do is ask the bartender their name. Never have bad service after that. Also thank them by name at the end of the night, and 9 out of 10 times, they remember me if I go back.

Generally speaking more prep goes into restaurant carry out orders and many places will take bartenders or servers away from their other responsibilities to prep the order. McDonalds and other fast food places don't have that same dynamic.

You already seem to understand this or else you wouldn't be doing the mental gymnastics of trying to justify why you're not tipping at places you even acknowledge it's expected. Olive Garden has shitty food and I haven't been there in over a decade but I shouldn't have to explain the difference between it and McDonalds to you. You already know.

And again, considering how hard that industry has been hit this year, you go from cheapskate to just an asshole if you're stiffing those in the industry on tips in a year like this.

Stiffing? They’re the one stiffing me if they expect a tip when offering no service other than cooking my food ala McDonald’s. They should be grateful I’m ordering something from them during these covid times.

They need me more than I need them. They should be tipping me for doing business with them!

Mr. Pink over here.

I definitely tip if it is a place I go to often, like Roseangela's. Usually at other places, too.

No one is talking about stiffing the wait staff or bartenders. Actually, it was mentioned that if they prepare your food you should tip them since you are taking them away from their other customers. We are talking about an established carryout location like pizza or Chinese food. Those places do not use wait staff or bartenders to prepare takeout orders. I suspect you never worked at a restaurant.

Not to mention your local gyro, pizza, or sushi joint is usually a mom and pop operation, not a global giant like McDonalds, and the tips help keep the place open. I usually think tips in those joints go into the till and get split evenly between the cooks and counter help. It's one of the reasons I tend to avoid big fast food chains in favor of the small local joints. And yes, if there was a tip jar at fast food places I would probably through a buck in there too.

Ignorance? LOL The difference in the food doesn't make the job different. The person behind the counter at McDonalds versus the pizza joint are both paid the same relative amount on an hourly wage. Neither of their pay is predicated on tips like the wait staff or bartenders. And your idea of waitstaff or bartenders prepping the takeout food is wrong since that is not their job and that's not who we are talking about tipping anyways.

That is definitely who we are talking about in at least half this thread. I directly referenced HY's Olive Garden example.

The split tips was not my experience when I worked in the kitchen. I will say that we have upped our takeout consumption for local family-owned restaurants to help them out since the pandemic hit.

I once played golf at a pretty exclusive place. Part of our group, and in my foursome, was the former managing partner of the Chicago Ernst & Young office. Obviously he has more money than I could ever dream of having. On the 18th hole I said to the group "what do you think, $100 a guy for our caddie?" He thought $50 a guy was enough. I think he was shamed into giving $100. The round was free btw.

Which is why MANY have said they tip less at those joints.
