This is my philosophy as well.

And for those people who are adamant the you should tip when you pick up carryout, where do you draw the line? Are you tipping at McDonalds? How about the person at the deli counter slicing you cold cuts or the cashier and bagger at the grocery store? I tip people whose wages are dictated by tips. And if they give me good service, I tip them well.

I don't think it's complicated. You should always tip at restaurants, you shouldn't tip while getting fast food.


2 scenario's : tip or not tip ?

1.Olive Garden carry out - corporate giant. i order online, i go pick up the shit. i say no tip. if i was sitting there during normal times yes I would tip. but not in this case.

2.Local Sushi joint - i call in my order, they make it, put it in a bag for me, i walk or drive there and pick it up. again I say no tip.

Just admit you're cheap instead of trying to justify your behavior. It's ok, a lot of people are.

Regarding lack of service at restaurants, I have no problem anymore going out of my way to get a waiter or bartender's attention. For as long as I remember, Mickey Finn's has had bartenders who just refuse to make eye contact. Drives me nuts. That led me to be much more aggressive as a patron.

On the topic of "bad waiters". If you see your waiter a lot, even not at your table, then it's likely not the waiters fault for the poor service. If they disappear for long periods of time then it's likely their fault for the poor service. When the kitchen was going slower than I would like then you make sure they have full drinks and bread.

It's funny...whenever I go to a bar that isn't a regular spot for me, first thing I do is ask the bartender their name. Never have bad service after that. Also thank them by name at the end of the night, and 9 out of 10 times, they remember me if I go back.

No one is talking about stiffing the wait staff or bartenders. Actually, it was mentioned that if they prepare your food you should tip them since you are taking them away from their other customers. We are talking about an established carryout location like pizza or Chinese food. Those places do not use wait staff or bartenders to prepare takeout orders. I suspect you never worked at a restaurant.

Not to mention your local gyro, pizza, or sushi joint is usually a mom and pop operation, not a global giant like McDonalds, and the tips help keep the place open. I usually think tips in those joints go into the till and get split evenly between the cooks and counter help. It's one of the reasons I tend to avoid big fast food chains in favor of the small local joints. And yes, if there was a tip jar at fast food places I would probably through a buck in there too.

Neither of their pay is predicated on tips like the wait staff or bartenders. The split tips was not my experience when I worked in the kitchen. I will say that we have upped our takeout consumption for local family-owned restaurants to help them out since the pandemic hit.

I once played golf at a pretty exclusive place. Part of our group, and in my foursome, was the former managing partner of the Chicago Ernst & Young office. Obviously he has more money than I could ever dream of having. On the 18th hole I said to the group "what do you think, $100 a guy for our caddie?" He thought $50 a guy was enough. I think he was shamed into giving $100. The round was free btw.

Ignorance? LOL The difference in the food doesn't make the job different. The person behind the counter at McDonalds versus the pizza joint are both paid the same relative amount on an hourly wage. Neither of their pay is predicated on tips like the wait staff or bartenders. And your idea of waitstaff or bartenders prepping the takeout food is wrong since that is not their job and that's not who we are talking about tipping anyways.

Which is why MANY have said they tip less at those joints.
