It wasn’t until a few years ago when I saw a nature special of pelicans eating young seabirds that were still flightless that I found out they didn’t just eat fish. Nasty birds but still chuckle when I see them fly over the farm. Never make sense to me to see them so far inland or so far north.

I ran the Green Bay Marathon a few years ago; in May. Had to stop on a bridge and watch what seemed like hundreds of pelicans in the river. I had no clue their habitat includes Wisconsin.

I took a field ornithology class (let’s be honest, bird watching for biology credit) in Montana over my first summer out there. It was then that I learned the white pelican was an inland nester and were expanding their nesting range allying the Missouri and Mississippi River drainages. Moving up the Illinois too. Still looks odd when I see them.

Can't say as I've ever seen a pelican in Illinois.
