Looks like this guy's abilities were overhyped by evaluators/analysts. Above average player but not transcendent as his contract suggests.

His decline in performance also aligns with the hiring of Chuck Pagano as defensive coordinator.

Coincidence or causality?

Another possibility is that he's simply not as explosive as he once was. Remember how he used to knock over offensive linemen with that one-handed stab move on a regular basis? When was the last time he did that?

He's not the same player anymore. He used to be mentioned in the same breath as Aaron Donald.

I lean towards physical decline. His explosiveness has disappeared. He'd shoot off the line with absurd speed and power.

I think with Mack it’s a combo loss of ability/coaching. I don’t like Pagano overall but I personally can’t pin Mack’s entire decline on him.. Eddie Jackson is a different story -I blame that decline quite a bit on Pagano.

Mack actually had probably the best defensive game yesterday. he certainly didn't cause all those offside penalties. they shot themselves in the foot. i'm just glad the saints finally got around to taking advantage of it. that first quarter was awful. it deserved to be broadcast on Nickelodeon.
