I don't think that is petty at all... Stone stood up for himself without directly throwing Murph under the bus.

Interestingly enough, there have been numerous sports media folks who have eluded that Stone makes the team photo in all-time insufferable douchebags. I've never met Mr. Stone, but his demeanor on the Cubs broadcasts, WSCR, and Sox broadcasts had done nothing to dispell said rumor.

I think he's a terrific analyst... as good as it gets, but I also believe he's a first rate ass-wipe of a person. Then again, so is Murph, and so is Boers.

Murph has been calling out Stone a lot lately. This response from Stone does not seem petty to me...but this also looks like a situation that could get a lot worse. It'll be interesting to listen & watch it sort of play out.

Murph's not been calling out B&B lately "they're real team players" etc. he needs a new foil and since no one else on that station will challenge Stone, he sees some low hanging fruit. He'd have a whole week's worth of shows going over which Stone predictions ended up on their face....one day Terry's gonna snap on Stone too, just watch...

I have heard Stone take veiled shots at Murph when on with B&B, as well. Neither is without blame in this pissing match.
I used to like Stoney when I only heard him do games. Now that he has a longer forum, I find him to be a self-aggrandizing ass-hat that loves the sound of his own voice. I have a hard time listening to him anymore.

Hub + Stone = Match

While both are good analysts, Both are also complete flaming rectums and overly full of themselves.

Yeah, he also spelled his teammates names wrong.
Handley and Lawrence. He's a busy guy, probably just lets it fly on the keyboard without
spell checking everything. No big deal.

Murph really started going at Stone more often after getting his contract re-upped.

Considering Murph still is going on about a "quality bullpen stat" and couldn't grasp the concept of a salary cap in football; if I was Stone I wouldn't bother with the guy either.

Let's see Murph has pissed off:

Boers
Berstein
Farmer
Buffone
Mully
Hanley
and now
Stone

Good thing he's proud to admit he never would go into a lockerroom for an interview. Ozzie would just slug him for either rambling about bullpen quality or asking him why he played one player over another or Pinella would ask him "What the hell are you talking about?" when he goes on about being a bleacher bum, being there with his bugle, back in the day when noone showed up and that being "good times back then!"

I haven't listened to murph in months so this is news to me, but good for murph. I agree with the other posters that Stone comes off as a real pompous ahole. What's even worse is the ass kissing a guy like bernstien gives him which even boosts Stone's ego. Stone thinks he's some holy man walking on water whenever he comes on the score. Good for Murph for taking the shit to Stone. Now, I remember last year Murph and Stone got into it about Jacque Jones, which I agreed with Stone that Murph was getting his personal feelings about Jones interfere with his baseball analysis. But It's good to hear Murph is fighting back. I think murph will one day end up at WGN, since it seems like he would be a better fit there. But that list of enemies Murph has is a good one, since half those guys (especially Boers) are a bunch of douche-bags. And ya, murph can be a douche-bag himself (lookup my story about how I went to meet Murph at a radio event at a mall).

added : ok some of you pm'd me on the story. I found it way back here posted a few years ago. Story pasted below :
---------------
I must have posted the story as 'guest' when that was allowed here.

anyway, here is what happened.

I was 18-19 when Murph started on WLS and he had a gig at the local mall. So I was a fan of his show and drove out in a bad sleet storm to go meet him and see his show from the mall since he was broadcasting from there.

Anyway, I get there and Murph already has a pissed off attitude. There are all these old people around him and he's talking to them so I go up there and say Hi Murph, I'm a fan of your show, it's nice meeting you. The guy turns out to be a REAL TOOL and just gives me a stare and ignores me and talks with his 60something buddies.

Naturally I was pissed. I spent all that time driving in sleet storm and gas money to meet this guy and he turned out to be a total jerkoff.

----------------------------------------
REPLY:

Wow I can't believe you guys found it, thats great!

Well ya, that was like 17 years ago, so I've forgiven him. I dont live in chitown any longer so I do enjoy his show because it's the only time I can hear some chicago baseball. Maybe If i was in chitown I would feel the same as you. Guy's probably a bigger jerk now then before.

I got a 2nd story that involves an argument between murph and my brother back in around 94. Murph was doing his 69 cubs love bit and how that was the greatest cubs team ever in the last 25 years. My bro called and was telling murph that the 84 cubs were also a great team and were in the hearts of many Chicagoans since they really brought the cubs back from the dead in the media's and fan's eyes. Of course, you can't say anything that can offend murph's 69 cubs right? Murph goes on about how the 84 cubs were no where close to the 69 cubs, that how this and that and those were weak players or not as appealing personalities blah blah blah. Anyway, my bro got pissed at him and said at least the 84 cubs WON SOMETHING! Of course murph cuts him off the air before it gets on the radiowaves.

Shit, just typing that 2nd story pissed me off, what a f'n wanker murph's always been.

Anyway, those 69 CUBS are the most worthless team in the history of baseball. If those bums won the World Series in 69, they wouldn't be half as famous as they are today for choking that season away. And Murph is the #1 loser for being their #1 fan. Yes I am a cubs fan, but don't let me even start on Ron Santo, #1 clown of the 69 cubs. That guy personifies Cubs Loserdom through and through. If I was running the cubs, I would have no one from that 69 team even step foot in wrigley. If i wanted to build a WINNER (keyword), I would stop having anyone representing that loser tradition that personfies the cubs and especially that 69 team!

ok enough of the rant....i take my peition back.

Stone comes off like a asswipe. Stone could call Murph and settle it, instead he goes on his website and spouts off, I have lost a ton of respect for stone over the last year or so.

Why should Stoney care what Murph said?
Steve appears to be pretty thin-skinned in this case.

first off, Stone DOES have thin skin. Almost every week on his emails section within his website, he responds back to some idiot who called HIM an idiot instead of ignoring them. Secondly, for a guy who carries himself with such importance and who handles the english language so well verbally, it really is stupid not to have an editor on your website to catch the TONS of misspellings. it makes him come off as really unintelligent. I even emailed him offering to do it for free, and what kinda response back do you think I got?

When did he piss off Berstein, Farmer, Buffone?

Pray Tell.

Berstein I don't know exact details; but for Buffone, I know he honked him off something fierce when he (Murph) went on and on a few years ago about how "the Bears have a new stadium, they have additional revenue because of it, why don't they invest that into the team?"

Buffone: "Murph, let me tell you; they'll invest what they can, but they have a salary cap to consider."

Murph: "Oh I know that, but they should invest every dime into the players, not lining their pockets like Cubs management."

Buffone: "Murph, like I said; they have to keep in mind the salary cap...."

This went back and forth with Murph continually shoe-horning the Cubs brass into the conversation (including an Andy the Clown sound-drop), until Doug yelled at him asking why it was so freakin' hard to understand that the NFL has a salary cap. I think either Zack or Laurence was in on the segment as well, kinda had to mediate it back on track.

As far as Farmer, back in 2006 Murph was going on and on about how Sox broadcasters hated the Cubs. Farmio called in and told him no, he doesn't hate the Cubs. Murph kept it up, Farmio got POed (I see a pattern forming here) and basically hung up and I don't think has been on all that much since.

I make no excuses for Stoney, as he (like many) can be full of themselves, but considering how many times Murph has pissed off fellow broadcasters; I have to be honest I was shocked he got a renewal on his contract.

So what do you call those who cannot capitalize the first word in a sentence? How about those who add an extra space between sentences?
Wait a minute. This is Stoney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure why my unintelligent ramblings on a message board are being compared to a smart man who uses the English language very well verbally but hacks his sentances and misses on the correct spelling for many players and some simple English words. It comes off as an eigth grader's writing on the website...

If its two people I would like to see have fight to the death and have both win, its Stoney and Murph. These are two of the thinnest skin people in the business. I loved Stone back when he was with Harry, when he wasnt the star, and just did his job without any agendas. After he came back with Chip, it seemed he let his agendas creep into his broadcast. He let himself become more and more of the story as time went on, and he began to read his own press clippings. He was allright the first year on the score, but to me it seems since he has been getting the checks from the Sox, he hasnt missed an opportunity to take a subtle shot at the Cubs when ever he has the chance. Whether its making comments about the Cubs high payroll(of which the Sox is in the same ballpark). Or just pointing out everything that he thinks is wrong with the Cubs repeatedly (Their best closer isnt closing, their best leadoff hitter isnt leading off ect.) Maybe when Stone is done grinding his ax, Ill start listening to him again. For now, however any Stone segment is going to be station changing time for me.

Not defending Murph, but Farmer hates the cubs, Farmer denying it just makes him a liar.

Also, like I have said before, Stone doesnt offer anything to the score, he repeats himself or states the obivious.

I met and got to talk to Farmio two days after the incident, asked him about it and he clarified what he doesn't like. He doesn't care about the Cubs; what he can't stand is the obnoxious Cubs fan. (He didn't say he hated all Cubs fans, just those who can't just enjoy their team without being obnoxious/rude/ignorant to the other fans/teams. He then said, "You can say that about all fanbases. Even the Sox have their share of morons.")

As far as Murph, he said, "I can't stand that guy," and changed the topic.

You might like me Frontman, but I love you

No, I know all fan bases have asswipes, thats a given, but Farmer acts like there is 100 good cub fans the all the others are assholes. I dont like farmer, never have never will, I just find the guy beyond annoying and when starts judging people, I find it funny because most who know him, find him to be a asswipe. Again, my lack of tolerance for farmer does cloud anything good he might do or say, its not fair, I know it, but he does the same thing.

Muprh and Farmer are similar when it comes to their personalties, they want all the attention, they want to talk all the time and they are never wrong, they could be brothers.

With that said, I rather spend time with Farmer then Murph.

Vann, Ed says that he doesn't hate all Cubs fans.
That means he believes there are only 100 good fans. Has he ever said that?

Stone does basically give the same report all week, and then carries over alot of it the next week.

Stone's Cub Ax to grind is an issue. He does often compare the Sox to the Cubs when he can find a stat to make the Sox look better. He has lost some respect with many for this. It also brings im down a notch as an analyst when he tries to talk about the Cubs positives.

He really has a problem with Jim Hendry after the whole Kent Mercker issue. I am nt sure what he wanted Hendry t do, but it is obvious Stone has some unresolved issues.

I applaude Muprh for being the only guy on the Station who backs the Cubs.

That is except for the closet Cub fan, Bernstein.
