This. The O-line looked better toward the end which should be considered an improvement going into next year. Montgomery, Mooney and Kmet please Bob and they appear to be solid players but none of them appear to be stars. The D has been slowly declining over the last 2 seasons and there’s no reason to think that will change with a new coordinator. And ultimately the QB situation will likely be worse. That, in particular, puts them in a bad position. If they draft a guy at 20 then it’s almost a certainty he won’t be of any help for a year and more likely 2 (assuming he turns out to be good). By then the D will look entirely different. The Management team as well. This is why the (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky miss is such a killer.

I agree, but what does starting caliber mean? If they choose an O-lineman at 20 he should start and be solid immediately. Still a QB problem though. If you choose a QB then he’s likely not a starter or at best going to struggle. At that point your premise requires the guys picked in rounds 2 & 3 to be immediate starters and also good. History says that’s unlikely. It just doesn’t seem likely that next year won’t be a step back.

I think that’s a reasonable position, but it requires (essentially) tanking next year. Unless you extend Pace and Nagy further into the future I’m not sure how you get them to buy in.
