His partner when he was in Dallas was Brian Broaddus the long time Cowboy scout. If he'd been offered jobs I think he would know. He put out a 400-500 page draft guide every year that sold well and had a Dallas radio show. The Athletic made a good enough offer for him to give up the show and offer his guide thru them. I think The Athletic are the only ones paying anyone right now. Zeirlein has a morning show in Houston and is head draft scout for NFL.com. Jeremiah is the draft guy for NFL Network and has already interviewed for jobs. Mayock was hired with the Raiders. If you don't think the teams are aware of these guys I don't know what to tell you...

Aware of them? Sure. I’m sure they are all aware of Kiper too and watch his best available list before they select so that they get a good grade post-draft. Clearly the Raiders thought enough of Mayock to hire him. Then again Reinsdorf once hired Hawk as GM. If Bruger is viewed by an NFL team as being a great scout then I’m sure they could pay him more than The Atlantic considering how much money is at stake every draft.

Again, who have they predicted success/failure for correctly in the past that has you giving your trust to them from an analytical standpoint..? I mean, Hub Arkush predicts/analyzes all kinds of things, publishes his own magazine (or whatever his family started).. but he’s become so legendarily bad at analyzing it’s hard to take him serious.

That’s why I posted that YouTube clip of O’Sullivan breaking down tape of Jones. That’s tangible, he’s showing you plays then walking you through and thoroughly explains what he’s seeing, which demonstrates an intimate working knowledge of the game, the position, the positions responsibilities.. I’ll take that over ‘he doesn’t have lightning his arm, he’ll never sling bolts through the heavens like Zeus..’ Ok, cool, walk me through what you specifically see that brings you to that conclusion.

Btw, before this goes too far I’d like to add I’m not predicting great success at the next level for Jones.. I do like him, but who knows how good he’ll be.. this is becoming more about questioning people’s sources and why they trust those sources.

(For example)

I’ve used ‘Lindy’s’ draft guides for over 20 years. I find they have a very good track record with how they’ve graded players in the past who have gone on to varying degrees of success.. so I have continued to use them because of that. They’re not always right.. but their analysis has always been pretty consistently accurate. That said, I use various sources every year for this stuff and try to keep track of who seems to have a good eye based off their past predictions/grades and how accurate those are/were.

Local or regional scout is a low paid, entry level position with high turnover. My guess is that the bulk of scouts aren't even full time employees. I don't doubt some of these guys could find a job somewhere in the league.

I don't think I've ever heard Hub correctly predict a deaft bust or draft star.

He only had to give up one past 1st rd pick to get him. Trading future picks to get him now, when he is ridiculously expensive is beyond a fireable offense.

Like he wants to leave his current garbage ownership situation only to go to another one that includes both a lame-duck coach and GM in a cold-weather city.

This is why not fifing these dopes is disastrous, Watson is a good QB but you can not trade away your future to get him.. He is making a huge salary and no draft picks will tank a franchise.

^Agreed. Watson’s a helluva player but the Bears already blew their best shot at him in 2017. McCaskey really needs to keep these idiots reigned in on this stuff.

Watson on the Bears with a declining defense, doomed coaching staff and front office with no way to build around him for at least 3 years is a disaster.

Once again, the draft is the Bears best shot at getting this right. Be patient, don’t overpay, select the best QB available in this draft.

Put me in the Watson is a good get but you can’t gut your team and future drafts to do it.

I fear a Jimmy G will be coming to the "rescue". This seems like a great year to find a stop gap solution and draft a developmental guy. Foles or Garoppolo aren't the answers.

Bad take imo. A guy like Watson is never available. For a team like the Bears you pay literally whatever the fuck it takes and figure it out later. Or you could just go the next few decades hoping to get a QB as good as Watson eventually.

The salary cap will probably be about $180M or less next year. The Texans aren't going to take a $70M dead cap hit and need to gut the rest of their team in order to trade Watson for a bunch of future lottery tickets. Talk of a Watson trade is just talk for at least the next 2 years. He'll be on IR by then.

Pace and Nagy don't have time to develop someone. They need to put a professional offense on the field next near or they are gone.

Amari Rodgers in the 2nd or 3rd round is intriguing.

That dude makes big catches, and he is fast.

Wasn't that roughly the same logic on the Mack trade, which you were pretty critical of even from the start?

I suppose it could be, but are you trying to say a DE is as valuable as a QB?

A top QB is more valuable than a top 5 DE but either greatly improves your team.

But you shouldn't be giving up a ton of draft capital for the DE until you have the QB. I think the last couple seasons in Chicago has shown that.

I'm not sure if a top DE is worth the same as even 4-5 years ago...The best offenses/QBs are designed to either get the ball out quick, or scramble away from pressure. Individual sack performances were down across the board this year. The best (stat wise) defense in the NFL this year(Ravens) did not have a bell cow sack artist.

Or I could be overreacting to a 1 season anomaly.

few people are talking about what a huge injury risk this guy is. I still think that's why Pace didn't take him.
