And frankly, if this helps prevent her going Barret Robbins or Dave Duerson in retirement, good for her. Fuck the arm chair analysts who never really did dick in that forum.

There is no way her team is supportive of this even if they say they are publicly. I don't think I could be as a parent nor could I live with myself. The olympics mostly suck I get burned out on them easily. I guess I like a few events and it does have it's moments. I remember some successes and some failures as the best moments. Derek Redmond is my all time favorite olympic moment. This is neither, it's bizarre. She's just giving up, all that work, all that sacrifice, all the great moments she's had seemingly for nothing. I can't see how that's good for mental health but whatever. People can convince themselves of a lot of things.

I don't really understand the parallel you are drawing with Robbins or Duerson. Everybody's story and situation is different, I'm not sure their issues apply here.

Like Rob Base we all have a little joy and pain but I think what makes us human and better off is sharing that. I don't see how this is a good decision for her or her mental health. The worst that happens is she fails and maybe that's what she's afraid of but not knowing seems worse. Nobody will really care if she fails but they will remember this and most probably not fondly. Wouldn't that be worse?

I quit on gymnastics as a kid when I screwed up and got hurt on a vault. As a result, I've always respected their athletic skill and risk they're taking. Especially her trying to keep pushing the envelope. But while I don't really watch much anymore, I do know that her performance has been tailing down since at least the Olympic trials. Hers issues aren't brand new. And that the knee jerk criticism here is laughable. Funny how it's usually the guys who know the least about sports.

And it's baffling how you can't (won't? ) see the parallels, especially with Robbins.

I'm sure its the kind of stuff all these girls deal with because the competition is so cutthroat at the top. Lets see the laundry list of fractures and sprains suffered by the girl who lost her spot so Simone Biles could raise her profile and be in a UberEats commercial.

I think the most fair perspective on this would have to be Simone Biles definitely let her team down, but mental health is a serious topic.

And that really should be where it ended. But selective grave dancing is a joy for MANY here.

No one likes a quitter. And the mental health stuff just seems to be an excuse for her quitting after she had just had one screw up.

I liked gymnastics, I was small and fearless too. My coaches loved me. The gym was too fucking cold though. If her issues really are mental health related then okay I guess seems odd but that shouldn't be used as a crutch because she is afraid of failing.

I really am beginning to believe that it's a generational thing. Between the ex 49er from Wisconsin that quit after year two, to Paul George and now with Osaka and now Biles, young athletes are worried about all kinds of their own long term health more than us olds can usually appreciate. Realizing how short athlete's lifespans have historically been, I get it.

Yeah, and people should let this play out before heaping scorn on a 24 year old who felt the pressure of letting her teammates down.

Oh ok so she represents America and we should all be extremely proud of her when she does well.

I doubt that there is any evidence of you actually doing this.

I don't think you understand the idea of grave dancing. I enjoyed none of that. Unlike some of the relative glee at crapping on that girl in this thread.

I don't enjoy what Biles did. As I said earlier this morning, if she has serious issues she should be getting the help she needs. Not taking part in press conferences on the other side of the globe. And regardless of her being healthy or well right now, she is not immune to criticism.

I do, however, enjoy you refusal to admit you were wrong about the '96 Gold medal and the events that lead up to it.

She let them down in the worst possible way though didn't she? If should would have tried and completely failed that's far better than what she is doing. It's really sad.

Come on. Since you once were a gymnast, you understand just how much confidence is required.

For Biles to just bathe in all the adulation, money and fame then quit because "loldontfeellikeit" is bullshit. Its stupid. If this was what she was going to do at the Olympics they should've sent somebody else who at least had the intention of competing.

According to the article I read she is still considered the best gymnast in the world.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/o ... al-health/
Quote:
So here was Simone Biles, unquestionably the greatest gymnast on the planet, crippled — on the stage she owns, performing the tasks she had trained a lifetime to pull off, in the moment that mattered

Yet still undeserving.

If I’m reading this correctly, she bowed out of the team competition, but will still compete later this week in all four individual events and for the “all around” title.

If that happens, this in bad form.

Something something Jordan Flu Game

If she thought someone else would have given them a better chance in the team event, it's an understandable, if still possibly wrong, decision. As someone who only watches gymnastics at the Olympics but can read things, my eye test random ballpark uneducated guess is she still would have better than her replacement (someone give me Biles SORG: Score Over Replacement Gymnast number!) at 80% Only she really knows how well she was feeling, but up til then she obviously didn't look 100%, though better than 80%. The arrow was pointing down though, so it isn't inconceivable she was under my pulled out of my ass 80% number. The good thing (probably not good for her though) is that we'll know eventually. If she competes in the individual and looks good, she'll look bad for skipping team. If she looks bad in individual, she'll look okay for skipping team but still look bad for, well being bad. Getting back to the mental health calculus, based on the 2 scenarios, I don't think what she did will end up helping her at all. I guess the 3rd scenario is she doesn't do individual, but that goes back to the taking a spot from someone else criticism.

Right. She had a bad day and was afraid she wouldnt perform well so its mental health but not so bad that she didnt immediately quit the rest of the games and come home. ( If she ends bailing out the rest of the way Im ok wearing this take for doubting her)

Kopech opted out beforehand. He didn't quit on his team in the middle of the game, which is what you are defending here

RR, so if this is Jay Cutler missing the NFC Championship game because of a "mental issue" would you have the same reaction?
