Starting McCullers is the correct move for Houston. Go for the kill shot in game 4. I remember the Flubs in 84 starting Sanderson in game 4 instead of Sutcliffe. Was a big mistake

I feel from a managing standpoint it is the correct move as it sends the right message to the players. If it doesn't work out, so what? Still have game 5.

So out of 32 managers, how many hold off their best pitcher until game 5 if he can go on normal rest on the road in game 4?

If you are referring to Lynn, he's not the best pitcher and a bad matchup. I think LaRussa likes the fact that Rodon is chomping at the bit. It's both a statistical and a gut decision. I like it.

But it is also theoretically good for the Sox. They get their hottest pitcher at home, where they seem to see the ball better than anywhere on the road.

I am speaking of what Dusty is doing. I am not sure what he is doing is abnormal.

We're going to beat Houston the next two games. The tide has turned. Everyone felt it the last game. Houston can't overcome the Sox great spirit and the spirit of the Chicago fans.

You need to get to the ALCS to worry about it. Is there precedent to hold off your best pitcher when he is on normal rest? I really don't know the answer as I never pay that close attention.

I think you have to look at the whole picture. In this case, I don't think it matters much. It's not like there's an enormous difference between McCullers and these other guys. But if I have a real top ace like Scherzer or Kershaw at his best and my next guy is middle of the road and I'm going against a team that is having pitching issues of their own like the Sox are right now, I think the best idea would be to try to close this one out without using my best guy and have him lined up for two games plus against the Red Sox.
