Take the NL, remove the pitcher from the hitting lineup, add that aging slugger and yeah, that makes a huge difference.
IMHO, you can't compare pitching stats in the AL vs. the NL anyway. Different rules.
In the NL you basically get one automatic out every 3 innings with the pitcher batting.
In the AL you have an additional slugger.

so, do you concede my point that Lilly's stats are inflated from being in the NL? Strange to see you coming to the defense of ES...

It's a double wammy with the different rules of each league. Not only do you have the pitcher batting but you avoid the "Power hitting" DHs that the American League has. All of the big sluggers that can't field play in the AL.

If you have an ERA below 4.00 in the AL you are a hell of a pitcher. A 4.00 ERA is much more impressive in the AL than it is the NL.

Yes, but not as the quality of players, but based on the fact that there's more hitters in an AL lineup.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the sun shines on a dog's ass once in a while.

1. Ozzie was asked a question. He answered it. Thats refreshing i think.

2. Cubs are superior? Better record I agree. head to head is 3-3. Recent playoff history- Sox win it all/Cubs choke.

3. Who cares about popularity, attendance or TV ratings. All I heard in 2005 was "No one even watched that World Series", "How can a team not sell out every game the year after they win a world series?"

Winning is all that counts. Cubs have won NOTHING YET.

yes, until the Cubs beat an AL team in the WS, they are a very good NL team, not the best team between the AL and NL. And Belvidere, I think we have the luxury of agreeing with you that the Cubs haven't won anything because it looks like the Cubs of the future will spend until they do win the WS.

I wholeheartedly agree... and yet his quotes would suggest otherwise.

His point was that W's and L's don't always measure how good or bad a pitcher is, but rather ERA is a much better measure. He is right. In 2002, he had a 3.69 ERA in 22 starts. Every other year in the AL, his ERA was mid 4s and a few times over 5. His starts are far better the last 2 years in the NL over every one of his years in the AL.

His record in 2005 with Toronto his last season there, included a 4.13 ERA, as well as 15 wins. He had 81 Walks and 160 Stikeouts. This season (as well as last) he also has the 15 wins. He also has 61 walks and 175 Strikeouts. Those numbers are VERY similar. You put a DH on N.L. teams and the numbers might very well be the exact same.

if you look at ALL of his numbers you'll realize which season was the anomoly...the 15 win season...

I don't know why people are debating this with you cof, the numbers don't lie.
