Montgomery either doesn't see holes as well as Herbert does or he simply prefers to run to contact rather than running away from it.

I think it's vision or simply a lack of trust in the offensive line.

If there is legitimate competition, I wouldn't be surprised if Herbert is #1 on our depth chart. He looks more like an Aaron Jones type of runner than Montgomery.

I’m starting to get some ‘smartest guy in the room’ vibes from Poles and his regime.. I’ve been reading daily articles about players they’re scouting and they’re (almost) all from small schools.. not a good sign imo. Latest one I read about was an OL from Chattanooga-Tenn

Again, I’m in ‘wait and see’ mode for at least this season and probably next season.. but I’m still going to read the tea leaves so to speak.. and I personally am not a fan of drafting small school projects (at least early in the draft)

Cole Strange. Lot of teams are interested in him.

PFF has him ranked as the 4th best guard and 85th best player overall in the 2022 draft.

He’s the latest example, not the only one. Doesn’t change my opinion on small school guys. Unless we’re talking about an exceptional player (like Randy Moss all those years ago).. I’m mostly against picking them.. at least for the first few rounds of the draft.

Also, it’s one thing to look into a guy that’s getting a lot of attention -but I’ve read about at least 7 or 8 players now the last couple weeks from small schools the Bears are looking at from various positions. Some of it could be looking ahead to undrafted FA types so they can hit the ground running (which is fine).. I’m hoping it’s not for their 1st few picks tho. We’ll see.

I’d add that this crap is indicative of the ‘smartest guy in the room’ type, which is not something I’d like to see again from a GM here. We’ve seen far too much of that already.

And I'm sure they already have their 39 and 48 list of guys. I wouldn't worry about small school guys at those picks.

Highly likely than numerous UDFA's not only fill roster spots, but will get tons of playing time due to this inescapable equation: roster needs>amount of draft capital.

I don't think we know nearly enough about Poles to say how he is doing yet. Gotta see how the roster shapes up this year and how his plan falls in to shape.

And in some ways every GM that exists needs to think they are the smartest man in the room.

Every GM should be lying as much as they can right now.

Christian Watson, WR, North Dakota is undoubtedly on that list

people are going to be pissed with this draft because the best player available at 39 is going to be on the defensive side.

i think you are exactly right. I have played around with a couple different draft simulators and every time the top 10-15 guys available at that pick are on defense.

So you are either going to reach for a offensive guy or take a DT, CB, or S.

I really hope they trade down

Another tight end.

Brad Biggs
@BradBiggs
#Bears announce they have signed veteran TE James O'Shaughnessy to a 1-year contract.

He joins a tight end room with Cole Kmet, Ryan Griffin & Jesper Horsted.

It's been apparent for a long time that the vaunted BPA at 39 would be a defensive guy. That's part of what has made Poles' moves in free agency rather curious. The Bears may not pick an offensive player until the third round.

I think Watson may be gone by then. Even if he isn't, I agree with your defensive player pick. There's going to be a 1st round D guy that falls to the 2nd.

If they trade down and get an extra pick(s) then I am fine with them taking a defensive guy with one of their picks in the 2nd round. But one of those top 2 picks has to be on offense.

The bpa may be a pass rusher and its supposed to be a good draft for them. If so, what about trading quinn for a 2+, taking the bpa pass rusher and then getting offense with the two other 2s?

I think that is a great plan. Trading Quinn should definitely be a consideration at this point.

I'll never understand why guys get riled up about obvious camp signings. They have an off season workout beginning today.

I'm still waiting for all those big time Wide Receivers that you said would be available in droves come draft time...

If you try to apply logic to the incredibly illogical process known as the NFL draft it would seem that the more picks (choices) you have would improve your odds of finding more players that will contribute by simply providing more chances for success. Hard to know if any player will be a success, guys with incredible athleticism do no always find success in the NFL, so it seems trading up for an unknown player makes very little sense, and trading down for more chances makes perfect sense. It does seem that the process is lacking in determining, especially at the QB level, a players ability to quickly recognize what the opposition is doing and then instantly select the right play/action which will provide the best change of success on a given play.

Also seem to make sense to pick guys with proven success at their position from big time programs early in the draft, and take shots at guys from lower competition levels, or guys with physical traits that were either never successful, or guys slotted for position changes, with later picks.
