I love TA7 and we've seen him outperform is defensive shortcomings. The problem is he has a lot of company in terms of being defensively weak. Teams that give away free outs and runs tend to not win Championships.

I was just pointing out the one flaw in his game that would be a factor of the White Sox never winning the world Series.

 Juan Uribe wasn't the best hitter, but his defense was just fine.

TA7 defense is more in the lines of Jose Valentin

Uribe started 106 games in 2004, 143 games in 2005, 127 games in 206, and 147 games in 2007.

Anderson over the last three years has started 49 in 2020, 122 in 2021, and 79 so far this year which might get up to 90 starts at best.

Interesting...Tim Anderson's highest WAR was 2021 at 4.8

Jose Valentin rocked a 4.9 in 2000.

Obviously WAR isn't everything, but I that's not what I would have ever guessed. 2000 Jose Valentin was pretty fucking good

It's an argument for playing every game you are capable to play. Especially this 2 day rest thing we've seen in the last few years. The butterfly effect can go both ways.

Seems to only go one way for the Sox. Moncada, Robert, Timmay, etc get extra rest to preserve them for the long haul and they still get hurt anyway.

MANY starting pitchers throughout MLB. One here that should be on the mound every 5th day throwing 100 pitches if he's capable. How long can you baby a 26 yr old?

Actually making me appreciate the fact the Cubs got one out of their core ( ( especially considering what a china doll Bryant is, how bad Baez is now) Sox team was lauded from here to the moon about how loaded they are ( after being putrid for years) , World Series expectations , just gonna slug their way to 100 wins for the foreseeable future. Just goes to show you how hard it is to get even one, need a lot of things to break your way , have good health and have to have 27 guys contributing with some having not good but great years to get you over the hump. Other teams just dont lie down because zomg Luis Robert is coming to town. Maybe it will still happen for these guys but right now you see how far away they still are from being a serious WS contending team.

Baseball is hard. No doubt about it. It's why the little things are important. Yanks haven't smelled the WS since 2009.

It's also why it's bullshit that certain teams tank, promising a "World Series contending team" after years of pain. There is no magic path or guarantee you'll win it all, so you should go for it every year (unless you're the Pirates or A's).

While you're right about tanking not automatically resulting in a World Series appearance, tanking does seem to result in multiple playoff appearances for most teams. If you're a team, like the Sox circa 2016, that hasn't been to the playoffs for eight years despite "going for it" every year, I can see why you would be tempted to try it.

Ive never liked tanking, if you look at the draft over the last 22 years ..you will see the best players are rarely in the top 5..just have to have good scouts and good organization from ownership on down.

I suspect you're right about the draft, but the draft is just one component of the tank, and probably not even the main component at that. For the Sox, the biggest component were the Sale, Eaton, and Quintana trades. Also, they picked up Robert as an international free agent and he appears to be on a higher trajectory than the tank era draft picks (Madrigal and Vaughn).

It obviously hasn't worked out that well for the White Sox thus far, but it worked for the Cubs, it worked for the Astros, and (after a couple decades of trying) it worked for the Royals. Also, there are always at least a handful of teams in the process of doing it, and I suspect they're not all cheap or stupid, but actually have a plan of making it work for them.

To be continually in contention you have to be a team that is rich enough to go out and sign a huge free agent every year (Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox) or a team like the Rays (it also looks like the Brewers are trying to follow this model and the A's had success doing this for years) who tries to acquire as many B+ players as possible and then trade them away when they get toward the end of their arbitration years.

As a Sox fan, I have completely lost my taste for the tank and I don't want to see the team engage in another tank for at least the remainder of this decade. However, as long as baseball's economic structure remains what it is, teams are going to keep doing it, and it might actually make rational sense for them to do so.

Without a tank job you can reference the 2011 - 2016 seasons. no tank, just mired in mediocrity.

I get tanking sucks, but the alternative is signing washed up has-beens like Todd Frazier, Adam LaRoche, Adam Dunn. Not to mention trading for guys like James Shields...woof.

Hard not to argue with any of this.

.468 winning percentage for remaining opponents...but by the way, the team that just swept them has a winning percentage of.........(.468).

Yeah, they’re just not a good team. All of those future opponents could make the inverse argument that they get to play the weak White Sox and would be absolutely correct.

I would have emphasized ‘they ‘and not ‘get ‘
Or maybe just emphasize both

I was going for ‘get’ to play a weak team v. ‘have’ to play a hypothetically good team, but I’ll take your notes under advisement and endeavor to be better.
