Not quite. USDOT sets the standards for inspecting trucks, and many of the regulations and laws for interstate trucks are federal. But there aren't federal cops for this stuff, so USDOT pays states to do it, covering some salaries and technology. There is an association of state officials which works with USDOT and the individual states to set standards so that the actual safety inspection or truck weighing follows the same checklist everywhere.

But the ability to allow trucks to operate driverless on a highway is still a state by state decision until Congress makes law otherwise. The reality is that weather knocks out a bunch of Western states where it would make sense, like Wyoming. At this point it is primarily states along I-10 which are moving forward, although a couple of states do allow testing because they are trying to attract tech jobs to their states.

Driverless trucks also will likely require dedicated lanes. Maybe in the big cities we can get rid of the commuter rails for them.

You and ltg had the beginnings of a decent conversation few weeks back about these jobs that never really got finished . The availability of these jobs to all the disadvantaged young adults on the south and west sides who say there are no jobs for them when jobs like this are plentiful, but I guess you have to have the willingness to do them as well.

The union can send out an entry level apprentice, providing there are enough journeymen at the shop. Say there isn't. Then hire a kid off the street and if he works out, put him in the program in 6 months.

You have enough journeymen to hire two union entry level apprentices or not? If you do, Local 597 is there for you. If not, then you do what you're doing. Let's stop beating around the bush. It's a legit loophole. The union will take a dues paying member you hire off the street. They don't have much choice. It's just I sense some crocodile tears about how you can't find anybody. Sure you can.

I don't buy that. This is one job market that would appear to be steady in demand. I would guess there's not a whole lot of Journeyman HVAC techs sitting on the bench...I'd guess they're already out working.

Had you posted this 18 months ago, my son (who is now almost 23) would have been good candidate. He's hell bent on not going to school and has since found a good job doing Warehouse work...and quite happy with it.

I can see if my son knows anyone that would fit.
