I need at least six players to go at the deadline except Robert. I think it’s also fine the manager and training/coaching staff can also be one and done.

Who had the Cubs winning more than 78-82 games in a best case scenario?

They probably will get to around that number, but they won't bring back much talent in return. Probably a bunch of fliers not in the top 30 of anyone's farm system for most of this talent. I'd like to think Giolito will bring back 1-2 pieces, but as a rental, seems unlikely that they are getting any top 10 prospects from anyone's system unless there is major competition for him.

Who had the Cubs winning more than 78-82 games in a best case scenario?

Most Score hosts had the Cubs as serious playoff contenders. That would be at least 87-88 wins. Shill Mulli during an early losing spell "Could we all have been wrong about this team?

Gordon Wittenmyer on the most recent podcast with Kap. "The underlying metrics are the Cubs could move past the teams ahead of them in the NL Central. That would be 87-88 wins.

Flipper Kap during hot streaks thought they'd be a playoff contender. 87-88 wins.

As mentioned oddball Spiegel's "80 floor" would be 87-88 wins.

CHGO, Locked on Cuubs, Cubs Talk (with Leila) podcasts had the Cubs as playoff contenders. That's 87-88 wins.

Hoyer and Ross said they were playoff contenders. That's 87-88 wins.

Yes, there's been this odd optimism from the Score throughout the year. Sometimes, various hosts will mention that the team is sort of average or lacking in some areas, but way too much hype for a team that most people thought that .500 would have been a good year. Just a few days ago, Holmes was arguing that the Cubs should go for it. I'm not even sure what that means - you trade for a reliever and a power hitter and suddenly you're going to go on a big run?

So flagship station over sells a team while rest of country and fan base figure 78 wins? Got it.

Seriously... Using the Score as your "how good are the Cubs" measuring stick. Most PR firms are going to talk up their clients.

Their preseason over/under was 77.5.
Sidenote: anyone that took the over on Arizona or Miami at 75.5 is looking good.

Back to the Sox... they suck, and most likely the trades they make won't make much of a long term difference. I have tickets for 2 games during the Cleveland series at the end of July. I'll still enjoy being at a game, and there are giveways my kids want, but depressing to think what their record might be by then. Who knows who will even be on the team by then???

This is a big issue. All that money to bums and their best relievers are arguably Gregory Santos and Keynan Middleton.

I'm about as big a Sox fan as one can be and they managed to sour me. I waited for years while they lost on purpose with the promise that when the time came they would make the necessary moves. They signed Andrew Benintendi and let Abreu walk to play a mediocre guy at first.

Vaughn is on pace to have 40 doubles, 21 HR, and close to 100 RBI. He's a little better at 1st than I'd thought he'd be, it's hard to say because he's a small target, but he can stretch out for the ball. Abreu, as usual, didn't catch fire until June 1. Which for the White Sox, is too late for that shit.

Like I said, mediocre.

Vaughn is obviously not great, but they made the right call on Abreu. He's putting up a .641 OPS, has 7 homers, is good for -.7 WAR, and is making over $19 million a year.

Sox won't get much of anything except a scratch off for anybody other than Cease, Eloy maybe, or Robert. So trade them. Seriously, what are you gonna do, build around 2 players?

Of course not. They'll bring Kelly in to close it out and lose by 5.

I would have taken the over on the Cubs and DBacks, not the Marlins. I had the Cubs at 82-80 if they could have a decent first half.

Back to the White Sox, I went to a game at AAA Charlotte tonight. A really nice stadium, not a bad seat in the house. The seats in the sections behind home plate have access to a small air-conditioned club area, not big enough for everyone but enough that I could hang out there during pregame since I got there 45 minutes before first pitch.

Sadly, the team is a shit pile of rejects, including Frazier, Piscotty, and Billy Hamilton. The manager fucked up and left the starter in one batter too long and the result was a towering home run followed by the immortal Luke Farrell trotting in to pitch because I guess Chris Volstad decided to retire. Hamilton did hit a home run, clubbed the shit out of the first pitch he saw.

But there is not one position player on that roster who belongs on a major league roster ever again.

Game exemplifies why these teams are both 15 under .500. White Sox cant hold a one run lead in the ninth because they hit 2 batters, only reason theyre even ahead to begin with was because the Cardinals cant field the baseball. Zero earned runs scored. Also Grifol pulling Colas for a PH once they brought the lefty in. Either play the kid or dont. Youre 15 under, now is the time to let him play and see if he can come through against lhp.
