We would have had our Basset Hound 11 years in January, we put her down this morning. Who knows how old she was when we got her, maybe 2 but maybe as old as 4. She was the worst dog I'll ever own.

She didn't listen.
She smelled terrible.
She barked all the time.
When we got her we had a Golden Retriever at the time that maybe barked 2x a year. After 4 weeks of the Basset in the house the Golden Retriever barked all the time as a result of the Basset barking.
She ate at various times: horse shit, her own shit, other dogs shit, kids shit when they were being potty trained.
She was incredibly athletic and could jump into cars, on top of tables. She'd to the latter to steal food.
The first two years we got her she would be the first person in the bed every night. When my wife and I would go to bed I would try to move the Basset, not out of the bed, just so my wife and I could sleep comfortably. Basset would try to bite me and bark, growl at me. After the first two years she stopped trying to bite me, but would still growl to voice her displeasure at being moved.
The last 4 months her farts were so horrible that we couldn't have guests at the house.
She ate every night between 5-6 o'clock. She would bark non-stop starting at 3 o'clock until she ate.
Taking her on walks alternated between me dragging her lazy ass behind me, or her completely stopping and laying down until she decided it was time to walk again.

I'll never ever love a dog as much her.

Sorry to hear it OP. Dogs are part of the family and leave a hole when they’re gone.

Very sorry :(

We had a Boston that checked at least half those boxes. We put him down in July 2004. Will probably never have a dog again but I still miss him.

Sorry Post that’s a tough one. Great story. Will you guys get another dog? We put our dog down in January and after 3-4 weeks decided we couldn’t be without a dog. We rescued a 6 year old boxer and my wife, who was never a dog person LOVES this dog. I’ve never had one make it to 11 so while tough that we only have a few years with her we have loved rescuing her.

T Bone, fun for me to respond to this. In this thread in September I reported we put down our other dogs. So Two Post and Three Post have really been emotional about both dogs dying. The fun part is that both of them unprompted and independent of the other told me they want to get another dog. It filled up my heart with joy. It just reinforces the message we are telling them that if we don’t want to be sad we won’t have dogs, but they realize the sadness is worth the joy of owning dogs.

We travel A LOT between x-mas and Easter (our goal every year is 20 ski days) and we want to do some things around the house that are much easier without dogs (replace fence in back yard). So we will talk with the kids about a new dog early in 2025. We are going to let them have a lot of input: type of dog, name of dog, if we want two dogs, etc. In a very real way these next dog or dogs will be more their dogs than the previous two. The last two dogs were really me and Mrs. Post dogs, these next will definitely be theirs.

Mom's 80th birthday, so I'm back in IL this week. Grey skies, rain, and fucking cold....this place is depressing.

everywhere is depressing when looking out of the window of an access road motel.

It wouldn't even take effort to find fun things here this time of year. There isn't enough time for everything to do.

Cold?? It was 50 this afternoon. Not even close to cold. Sounds like a new Floridian humblebragging.

I'll take that over 95 and humid.
