There's no need to be so juvenile towards Jim Pastor. Besides, he can't hear you - his ears are snug between the thighs of either Mo Davenport or Traug Keller, as he bounces between the two, trying to justify his job and appease both men simulateously.

Here's a truly comical quote from one of Pastor's bosses, Mo Davenport (from last June):

What is the strategy(ies) behind ESPN Radio’s successes?

You start out with the fundamental premise that one, content is king and then secondly if you serve the consumer--if you serve the listener--then you will have success. It’s a fundamental principal which sort of guides ESPN. How do you continue to serve sports fans? That’s the litmus test--if you’re serving your sports fans then there’s a good chance that you’re also going to be able to make some money down the road. There are times frankly that we won’t worry about the revenue implication. There was no way that we knew that we would be able to make any money at all by having a Sports Center from 5 o’clock until 6 o’clock. But that’s a risk worth taking for us because if it’s a good service and you know the commutes are getting longer why not see if that Sports Center resonates? The one thing that you sort of recognize in radio--I come from a little bit of a TV background.

I’ve been doing TV 25+ years before I came to radio last year this time--I was accustomed to ratings almost instantaneously, next morning. In radio, we have to be patient. You have to go with your gut, you have to if you make a decision this is going to be good content, this is going to be a good service to the consumer and that will eventually allow ratings to catch up and then you as a business will be able to grow.

I seriously doubt that this will be a good business decision. It may be couched in that but it will not prove out.

Chicago has almost never embraced a syndicated program. Mike and Mike are an exception, not a trend. Also, Greenberg's Chicago history does have something to do with that, along with the historic lack of competition. If Howard Stern could not get ratings, I hold out little hope for Brian Kenny and Colin Cowherd.

When the station no longer gets any ratings, ad dollars will dry up. Lowering your product's quality is almost never a good long-term decision. It's an easy fix to improve the bottom-line for immediate impact.

yes they did. It was a decent show imo, and I don't like Murph. Simple formula. One Sox fan, one Cubs fan. Worked very well until stupidity split it up.

I was referring more to their recent trouncings of Mike North.

I didn't mean to imply that they had never had competition.

But that was basically my point. That if/when they have competition, they would not be able to sustain their recent ratings success.

Ratings will dry up, and I'll be forced yet again to bounce around trying to find something listenable. MJH worked because the personalities complimented eachother, and they were able to keep eachother in check. I don't imagine the new show having much holding power. Maybe I'll just limit my sprots radio intake to W&S and M&M, and plug in the ipod the rest of the time.

Maybe you're right. I don't know enough about the radio industry to say one way or the other. I am just basing my opinion on a general understanding of business.

I do know this, however. Sports entertainment programming is not a commodity. As much as ESPN may want to treat it like the pickles on a McDonald's Big Mac where they can save $0.03/ton with only moderately increased risk of salmonella and nobody knows the difference. Bundles or no bundles, national advertisers aren't going to see much value in placing their ads in Chicago on a station's signal that is so ignored that the hosts can hear the echos in their headphones.

Anytime you lessen the quality of something that is quality-driven, you lessen the value.
