3 years and 15 million. Glad to see they finally made a move, but Byrd is just a guy. Heard someone say the other day, that the guy he compares to the best is Reed Mantle. Still need a leadoff man and a 2nd basemen. I would move Theriot to 2nd, and bring in a SS for one year.

No, and that's a problem. I guess most of my angst is due to the difference between Cameron and Byrd.

The money is good but the years are bad (what did he do to deserve 3 years??). You're right, they had to do something because the alternatives (Panzy, Ankiel, Fuld/R Mantle) are terrible.

I would not compare Marlon to Reed Johnson. Pretty decent stats. I was hoping the Cubs signed him. I think the team is going to be good with him in the mix. They should still search for a 5th starter/long releiver. I would like to see the Cubs use their farm system,but I like Marlon. He is a solid addition.

Yea he's an upgrade, but at what cost? Because of this marginal upgrade in CF can we not make a move at SS now to move Riot to 2nd? Are they planning on Castro being on the opening day roster? Who is our 5th starter?


Depending on how you look at stats, you can either A) Assume Byrd is good for another around 800 OPS season with his last 3 year split or B) Look at his career as a whole and set the expectations around a 750


I'm guessing Lou sticks him in the 7 hole and prays for a 750-800 ops
I think we'll need to revisit this deal in March and see everything that Jim does to really evaluate it

Three years? I thought those deals were only reserved for free agents of Milton Bradley's caliber.

And btw I wouldn't trust too many stats coming out of Texas, or at least expect them to translate to the Cubs.

.....Reed Johnson. Stats are our friend, and they prove that Byrd is bad. So either Reed deserves to be getting a 3 year $15 mil. contract or Hendry bid against himself again and way fucking overpayed for a mediocre CF.

This is why doing something just to do something is stupid. Marlon Byrd is a waste of money.
