Considering Purdue has won at Notre Dame once in like 30 years(Thanks Orton!) I don't mind it. Obviously playing a few games beforehand hasn't helped so maybe this will.

Towson? I've never even heard of them. If I wasn't so busy watching the internet update of the U dominating Florida A&M I would look it up.

They have NIU scheduled again in 2013. I'll be killed by a hurricane by then though so I won't be able to talk about it here.

I believe Towson is located in the great state of Maryland. Not positive, not gonna look it up.

That's a bummer.

Towson is in the same division as Villanova. I still don't understand how a team can play big time college basketball and not have a football team in the highest division. They'll be screwed over the next 30 years because football is such a bigger money maker that it upgrades all other facitilities. I mean, how come they don't create a Little East or something for all the non-power football Big East schools?

Maybe Villanova_Jim can help me out.

Oh how I've missed the agricultural based commercials that I've grown to love on the BTN.

I'm pretty sure that while a big time football program brings in by far the most cash of any sport, it also uses most of it. I think the ROI is much greater for a top basketball team. Isn't that right?

Not even close. Football is all that matters. Even at a place like Purdue who is significantly better both historically and currently in basketball. They literally pay for the whole athletic program.

All part of the plan. They need some work dealing with adversity.

But doesn't Villanova's basketball team pay for its entire athletic program?

Nope. They are heavily subsidized by the university
The basketball program only turned a profit of about $1M. Indiana will make that today playing Towson.

Villanova would be around $10 - $20 million on this list.

The U means business tonight. 35-0 with 5 left in the half. Ohio State better watch their ass next Saturday.

What about a program like Duke or Louisville? Do their football programs still have a better ROI? It's hard to find accurate numbers for this stuff on the web, but I'm guessing Texas and ND are the most profitable football programs. I'd also guess that Texas might spend the most.

I'd guess it's closer than others, but I would guess it is. Private schools don't have to disclose that information though. One of the reasons for the payouts is also the football television rights fees so Duke gets that even though it sucks.

Well yes, they invest more in facilities and other stuff. That was kind of my original point. Villanova basketball will suffer because Villanova football doesn't pay well. Basically, they don't really have much reason to turn a profit. They spend the money they get. They don't pay out dividends and they certainly don't want to give money back to the university so they improve facilities and other things.

This is the reason why you are seeing many traditional football powerhouses become basketball recruiting powerhouses and therefore basketball powerhouses.

What does it cost to run a big time football program? In that article you linked it says Michigan State spent $45 million on athletics with $6.8 million of it on hoops. How much of the remaining $38.2 million does it take to run the football program? What are there, about eleven non-revenue sports or so?
