A few blocks west of Western on Chicago, at the intersection of Campbell and Chicago. Great place to hang out indoors or outside. Agreed on the Rogue beers, so good. Not sure what else I've had but the Deadguy is delicious.

Here's an example, from today's Tribune editorial, of why gun ban laws are kind of stupid:

Quote:
Here's a good place for lawmakers in Springfield to start: Last spring, legislation to prohibit the sale and possession of magazines that deliver more than 10 rounds of ammunition passed the Illinois Senate. It is still pending in the House. It should be passed. This bill doesn't ban any weapons. It only prohibits the sale of the largest ammunition magazines, something several other states have already done.

The idea here is to limit the lethality of weapons. "Lethality is kind of like the nicotine of the gun industry," said Sen. Dan Kotowski (D- Park Ridge), a sponsor of the bill.

"The more lethal it is, the better it is for sales," Kotowski said. "What this bill does is limit the damage that firearms can cause. In the same way we reduce auto accidents and deaths through seat belt laws ... we can work to reduce the number of gun deaths and injuries by limiting the lethality of firearms

Let's say I am holding a Beretta 9mm P92 at your head. Today, that magazine holds 15 rounds. Now, lets say I take out 5 bullets and hold that gun to your head. Feel safer? Feel like that gun is less lethal?

Magazine capacity is a pointless law to invoke. I can change to a fresh magazine in about 2 seconds. If I carry 3 magazines of 10 or two of 15, it makes no difference in the lethality of this firearm.

I am not against keeping guns from people with a criminal history or mental problems. But this kind of law does not help at all. It doesn't do anything to keep people from becoming victims of crimes. This law is completely pointless, except to provide a way for lawmakers to pat themselves on the back, like they've accomplished something.

It's laws like this that give a bad name to "Gun Control". The GC movement should shun silly laws like this and get to the real issues at hand.

Why ban magazines? I doubt many gun owners can read them anyway.

I agree with you, DS. I think its kinda dumb too. I guess they are trying to manage what types of firearms are sold... kinda similar to banning automatic weapons. I agree with that type of regulation. You certainly don't need these weapons to hunt... the only reason would be self defense, but that also has its potential problems.

I simply think that if the hoodlum on the street buys a big gun, then the law abiding citizen buys a bigger gun. And then the gangs by bigger guns, then the police gotta get howitzers. I just don't know when it stops. Is the end game mutually assured destruction? I'd hate to live in a society like that. I'm not sure what is the right answer is... limit personal freedoms or have gun paranoia? I can't help draw the comparison to nuclear weapons... essentially the same thing on a bigger scale. Am I being too simplistic? Perhaps.

You need to meet some more soldiers. I can introduce you to some vets, if you need to establish some clue as to what you're talking about.

A firearm should not be required to be essential for hunting for it to be legal. Lots of people say, you don't hunt with it so why do you need it? Well, hunting is a small portion of what I do with firearms. Do you need a full auto for self defense? No. not today. Maybe in the future.

Ah, the guns/bigger guns/even bigger guns debate. If that were true, why don't the cops need howitzers today? Why is this escalation in armament slated for the future and not a part of history already? The 1911 Colt has been available for nearly 100 years, and no cops really seem to need to upgrade past that.
"Big" guns do not hold any advantage over "small" guns. I used to use a 12 gauge for deer hunting, and have found the 20 gauge to be more than sufficient, easier to cart around and generally easier to maintain. Bigger is no more lethal than smaller. That is something you'll never hear from media types or the politicians. You will learn that should you familiarize yourself with firearms.

Now I think you need to do some talking to Chicago's finest and see what they think about being well armed versus their competition. Escalation is on their mind according to the 3 cops I know... all of who had beats on the Southside at one time. Chicago cops have to purchase their guns... and last I heard, their income was slightly less than many drug pushers (or at least the amount of money they are willing to commit to firearms vs. feeding their family).

Separately, I didn't mean to imply bigger is better, but rather a more deadlier weapon (e.g., automatic vs. semiautomatic).

What kind of guns do these cops want?
I'm all for providing arms to Police, I don't think they should have to buy their own service weapons.

Thanks Muddy. I've been following this case fairly closely. Yesterday's developements were encouraging. Hopefully, this will take some of the air out of Daley's balloon.

This took longer than I expected, but I'm glad it's finally arrived at the Supreme Court.

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009 ... cases.html
The Supreme Court announced this morning it will hear a challenge to Chicago's gun restrictions that will determine if local handgun bans are legal.

Last year, the high court ruled the 2nd Amendment gave individuals the right to possess firearms and struck down Washington, D.C.'s gun bans.

Left open was the question of whether states and local governments are required to do the same.

By agreeing to take up the cases National Rifle Association vs. City of Chicago and McDonald vs. City of Chicago, the high court potentially could set in motion a nationwide re-establishment of the right to bear arms. Those two cases challenge several Chicago gun laws, including the city's ban on handguns.

In the high courts decision in June of last year, it ruled 5-4 for the first time that the 2nd Amendment establishes the right to own a handgun for personal self-defense, not only as part of a state militia.

Mayor Richard Daley immediately condemned the court's decision and vowed to fight any attempt to invalidate the city's now 27-year-old gun ban.

Hours after the court's decision, the Illinois State Rifle Association sued Chicago and Daley in an attempt to overturn the ban.

One of the plaintiffs is Otis McDonald, an elderly man who last year lived in the Morgan Park area and told the Chicago Tribune he keeps a shotgun at home to protect himself from gangs that plagued his neighborhood.

After the court ruled in the Washington, D.C., case, Morton Grove, Wilmette, Evanston and Winnetka dropped their gun bans, in large measure to fend off costly lawsuits.

So, a nutjob comes into a large lecture hall (like Cole Hall in NIU) and starts shooting? What good is a student with a handgun going to do if he's at another end of the room from the shooter? How does everyone know the non-nutjob(s) w/ a gun is "the good guy?" Then the cops show up and see students holding guns like it's payday in Dodge City and they're supposed to react how?

There was another shooting @ NIU today.
